I saw the Amazing Spider-Man on Thursday! It was delightful! :DDD
I was braced to hate it, because I love Spider-Man (I love him so much that I almost always actually bother to hyphenate and double capitalise his name) but the last Spider-Man films just... got him wrong. And I really don't trust anyone enough to get my hopes up that they'd make a film about Spider-Man as he is in my head. And, TBH, TASM doesn't feature Spider-Man as he is in my head, but there's enough there that I find TASM!Spidey to be an acceptable alternative version. GOOD JOB, GOLD STARS ALL AROUND.
He quips! :DDD Not constantly in that way that makes you kind of want to punch him (which is required for a truly in character Spidey, in my opinion), but enough. And given that the film included his origin story, and it is impossible to make Spidey's origin story light hearted, I thought the level of humour was pretty appropriate. There were a couple of times when the quipping felt a little forced to me, too (not sure if it was a script problem or a delivery problem or what), but it worked well enough overall that I could give those moments a pass.
And he is enough of a giant awkward dork while not suited up. OH PETER<333 Awkwardness + geekiness + quips = Spidey. THESE ARE THE THINGS YOU MAY NOT LEAVE OUT.
I also liked Gwen a lot! They were super adorable together. ashbfhfabh the scene where he asked her out omg dying. I felt a little weird about finding them cute together, because PETER/MJ FOREVER OTP (DEAR COMICS PLS MAKE THEM MARRIED AGAIN KTHNXBAI), but I can deal. I do wonder if/how/when they will deal with the PETER/MJ OTP issue in the TASM films.
On a purely shallow note, the film was VERY PRETTY. UGH, ADD RIDICULOUS FLEXIBILITY TO THE LIST OF SPIDEY THINGS THAT MAY NOT BE LEFT OUT. *__* His climbing and jumping and swining around were all very well done. IIRC, I thought they were the best part of the previous films, but advances in technology have clearly done Hollywood's Spidey rendering skills some favours. YESSSS UNNATURAL FEXIBILITY AND REFLEXES.
Plus Andrew Garfield was... really hot? Which is distinctly odd, having seen him in The Social Network, and read a notable ammount of porn about a character who I was picturing as him, you'd think I'd have noticed by now if I was going to find him hot. But. Yeah. Apparently he's not my type unless he is dressed as a teenager and/or in spandex? I don't even know. It was weird. HE WAS SO HOT THOUGH. And when he wasn't being hot, he was being STUPIDLY ADORABLE. I had felt a little unsure about his casting previously (I have some very specific mental images of Peter Parker), but he totally sold me. He is Spidey for me. I am excited to see him continue to be Spidey. I am ready for people to start using his version of Spidey as inspiration when writing Avengers fic where Spider-Man shows up. YES. GOOD.
I am also ready to start being recced slash fic about that one minor character I unexpectedly ended up slashing him with. WHOOPS. >__>
So basically my biggest problem with the film was that it did not feature the 1990's Spider-Man cartoon version of Madame Web as a Spidey mentor, because she was a fucking boss, and I would pay all of my monies to see her included in a Spidey film. /dork
In conclusion: I may have to go see it again, TBQH.
