chaoticset asked me in reply to my last post what motivated me to start posting again.
Well, the direct answer is that I'd heard of this "My LJ" thing, and when some other LJ was mentioned on my friends page, I actually did so, and thought it, and decided it looked like a good idea.
In a less direct manner, I was hoping it'd make me feel more connected, and less like nothing ever happens.
Yesterday, I did more hacking on my DVB data thingies, and am starting to feel like I'm actually getting somewhere with it... after fixing a bug in the thing that saves the data, the data seems to actually match, more or less, what the specifications I have say it looks like. (I'm missing one of the important specifications here, because it's expensive, which doesn't help.) Of course, unlike the DVB subtitling stuff, I don't quite know /where/ I'm going with it. I should possibly clean up the DVB subtitling stuff into a releaseable state...
I'm actually rather proud of perfectcr, the not-so-optical character recognition software I wrote for this. It's a good example of how having a specific problem to solve can mean that you can make additional assumptions that aren't true of the general case, and transform a very difficult problem into a fairly easy one. (The perfect in perfectcr refers both to the hopeful quality of the output, and the required quality of the input. It requires a font with lots of inter-character space, and most importantly one that has never gone through an analog stage. Moreover, it requires that the input consist of a single horizintal line. This makes it useful for converting image-based subtitles to text, and not much else, but it's very good at doing that.)
Oh, also, have watched Firefly up to, but not including, the last episode ever produced. I want to see how it ends, but am going to be very disapointed not to have any more to watch.
