Read an opinion piece on Wired this morning about music collections. The author expressed a high level of disbelief that a co-worker would have 90,000 songs in his Itunes collection, and that he had only 500, and that was more than enough for him ( Read more... )

Even that's just the tip of the iceberg! There's so much wonderful comics work that's been put out (in the past thirty years, especially) that the argument makes no sense. Speaking of Alan Moore specifically (because I know you loved V), you should see if you can track down a book he did called Miracleman. It's about taking a Superman-type character and using it to explore Nietzsche's ideas of the Übermensch.

When I think about what, to me, makes a good novel, I think about stuff like intricate plotting, believable and engaging characters, themes, symbolism, and a conclusion that satisfies the buildup. For other people, though, apparently, a good novel is synonymous with fiction and a lack of pictures.

We've got at least 14,000 songs in our library and we're done maybe 1/5th of the ripping of our CDs. Eventually we'll hope to have them all. I can't imagine only ever wanting to listen to 500 songs, but this is why people are different. I think ultimately the whole piece can be attributed to, "I don't understand why some folks are not the same as me."

I've got about 10,000 unique songs in my library. I can understand someone thinking a number like that is excessive (although I would definitely disagree). What I thought was so odd about the piece was that someone working for Wired would be surprised by that number.

I think that music downloading, regardless of its legality, has been one of the main driving forces behind the sales of things like CD burners, mp3 players, >100 Gb hard drives, and possibly even DSL and cable internet. Given the popularity of those things, I would imagine that large music libraries are a fairly common thing.
