Okay, I meant to write about this earlier, but kept forgetting to. We went and saw Juno and Sweeney Todd last week. I enjoyed both, but for very different reasons.
Sweeney was a lot of fun, but mostly just because a) Johnny Depp is enjoyable when he overacts, and b) I like Tim Burton doing his "Tim Burton" thing. The dark nature of the subject matter was nicely contrasted against the style of music used in it, and a few of the songs were quite hummable, but I think the story has become overused enough that it's a little hackneyed. It was by no means the best movie I've seen this year, but it was fun enough for what it was.
Juno, in contrast, was an absolute revelation. I'd forgotten that film (Hollywood film, at least) could be that emotionally honest and deep, yet without being heavy handed and boring. The script was tight, the performances were all top-notch, and the soundtrack was excellent. Speaking of which, I was listening to my ipod on the way to work today, and I realized that one of the songs from the soundtrack has a line about the 30 free lives code from Contra, which is wickedly nerdy and had me smiling for the rest of my walk. :o)
