I think in art...by deciding that you want to learn rules, techniques and styles...EVEN if you are doing this so you can break them, you are instantly deciding that there is a RIGHT way to do a technique and style. As long as you believe in the first place that there is a rule, you will never be able to break it. How can there be a RIGHT style,

Well, personally I prefer the idea of using/following other peoples' tutorials first. Once I gain the knowledge I scrap the idea of 'correct' way and then twist it/experiement it to make things go my way 8D;
And rather than saying 'rules' I prefer 'methods'.
I mean sure for exmaple you've a list of stuff to cook, and you have a recipe for it. But that doesn't mean you can't experiement on how to make such things in your own way without that recipe, to suit your own tastes.
The same applies for art ^^
Like colouring for example, I never followed people's tutorial or tips to colour from when I was younger until now. It's only when I saw a style/technique I like, I go and find how to do it (And believe me you find many tutorials that tell you how to do it in different ways, that alone already applies the fact that everyone has their own way of doing things) and at the end of the day you'll probably discover one method yourself that you find proud of.
Tell your housemate that if they go by the book on everything, I'll be imagining them using measurement applies and calculate the exact gsms instead of spoons etc to have it done the 'correct way' XD;
And only to realise that their cooking applicances are not strong enough to cook for them despite the correct methods in the recipe.
