Well, I'm back again. I figured I'd write another personal entry, before I caught you up on some more of my essays. Hopefully, people will start responding to them, as I really do enjoy debating. At any rate, this entry, thankfully, is full of all sorts of good news. Well, except the bit on Facebook, but that's just annoying, not bad.
When I left you last time, I told you about the horrible experience relating to Grandma, and that in the end, we all celebrated because she is completely free of cancer. That was on the 3rd of July. While I never celebrate the 4th, being a Greek patriot, Spiros was off from work then, so came over, and we had a little adventure! It was very hot, and he asked me if I wanted to take a walk. This was a rare and wonderful treat, so of course, I said yes. I thought we were just oging to walk a few blocks, to the park. This is not the one with the swings, but the one by the river, with the tables and benches. Spiros likes to watch the ducks and I enjoy his descriptions. Plus, it's a great picnick place, if you remember to bring stuff! *smile* But we didn't go there. Instead, we walked and walked, until I had to ask where it was that we were actually going! He said "we're just walking", meaning that he had no clear destination in mind. But it was beginning to wear on me physically, since I'm not used to such exercise. So we stopped at a bench. Spiros was willing to leave me to get the car, but I didn't feel safe without my phone and alone, so we chose to go to the pizza parlour, on whose benches we were sitting. Inside, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it wasn't freezing. I don't know why so many places blast air conditioners to the point where they feel like ice boxes! Has no one in this country ever heard of fans and windows? Anyway, we were lucky, as they were closing, and only a man and a woman were left to assist us, but they were wonderfully accomodating. I guess the man wasn't one of the cooks, because he apologised that he couldn't make us something fresh, but they had some leftover pizza and it was fantastic! As much as I adore Dominoes, I'm seriously tempted to go back to this one as soon as possible! They even had Vitamin water, which I hadn't drank
After that, we walked back, and actually did stop at that park, where, it turned out, there were fireworks! Mostly, they were in another town, but they were easy to hear and see. For some stupid reason, I didn't ask Spiros to describe them to me. So all I learned was that there was a delay between the light they emitted and the sound they produced. But no matter. The fire department came and set off a few right near us. It was the first time I'd ever heard fireworks so close, and I was a bit nervous, but still felt safe, since these were professionals. When a few civilians started setting them off, we decided to leave. On the way home, we started singing Paidia Tis Samarinas (Παιδιά Της Σαμαρίνας), a patriotic song with an amazing history. It was strange, singing a Greek patriotic song on the day of America's Independence, but as I'm a Greek nationalist, I had no problems doing it, nor wearing my flag, which I almost always do when I go out. All in all, it was a fantastic night.
Spiros came again, on Thursday night, and we went on an errand for him on Friday. It took all day, so I got to stay out of the house and relax with my man. Of course, there were no complaints from me. We even stopped at Wendy's, which both of us enjoy. He then came on Sunday, his usual day for visiting me, but nothing much happened then. We just relaxed and enjoyed each other's company.
Technically, our five-year anniversary is today. Spiros was planning on taking me to chair caning yesterday, which meant he would be coming here on Tuesday, and today as well. But I figured it was best if we celebrated on Tuesday night, so that he didn't have to do all of that running around, and he agreed. He wanted to take me out, but I had him switch the date to possibly this Sunday. Instead, I treated him to some food at home. Admittedly, it wasn't homecooking, but it wasn't bad either. I actually worked it out with Mom. At first, I just suggested getting him some tomatoes and a fruit bowl. Then, Mom suggested a napoleon, and finally, a whole meal from Boston Chicken. They started out really good, then became terrible, and now, she said, they're going green. So, after many years of avoiding them, I decided to go for it. I also mentioned, in passing, that he loves the berry almond salad from Wendy's. So we set the time for seven, and Mom said she'd bring it then.
Well, she had to go to the doctor's (nothing serious), so she brought it all early. I couldn't believe it! She got the two chicken dinners, a salad from Wendy's, and a huge fruit bowl, some tomatoes, and three cakes from Shopright! No, your eyes/screenreader aren't fooling you. They almost always have the napoleons there, but this time, they were all out! But they had three cakes there: chocolate mous, mocha, and Boston cream. I didn't know which I wanted, so picked the chocolate mous and the Boston cream. But she got all three! And then, she told me that she paid for all of those, plus the tomatoes! The rest, of course, came from my pocket.
Spiros got here at seven something, and proceeded to skip the entire chicken dinner and dive into the berry salad. I ate almost all of my dinner and loved it. We then each ate a piece of the chocolate mous cake, and later that night, we tried the mocha and the Boston cream. I was a bit disappointed with the first two, as they were more cake than cream, and somewhat dry, but the third was delicious! So was the iced coffee, that Mom got for me, and the fruit bowl. Now, I have lots of food in the refrigerator. But after I post this, I'll lessen the load by warming up the dinner that we got for Spiros. Mine came with maccaroni and cheese, and his came with vegetables. But they're carrots and garlic mashed potatoes, so I should have no problems eating them.
Yesterday, as I said, I went to my chair caning class. Due to the issues with Access Link, I hadn't been there in over a month, and let me tell you, it felt great to be back! I'm almost finished with the chair now. It's just a matter of putting the binder on the other two sides and then I can take it home. I'm not sure what we'll be doing after that, as they hardly have any chairs to cane. They had a few junk ones, but are having an open house next week, and plan on letting the visitors try their hands at them. Maybe, I'll buy a chair off of Ebay or see if I can find a kit of some kind. Since both Marsha and Bruce will be going on holiday, at different times this summer, I may just finish this one and then wait until September, when they should have more chairs and when there will be little else to do, as the cool and cold weather begins. For now, I'm relaxing and enjoying each day as it comes.
Finally, a little note on Facebook. I'm still a member there, and as always, I invite you to join me there if you wish. But I'm really becoming sick of their accessibility issues. The main site went from being mildly annoying, to horribly cluttered and a bit inaccessible, to almost completely inaccessible. Even the mobile site is showing undesirable features! There's no a weird separator between posts and the like button. It doesn't do anything, so is not a serious issue. But the comment boxes which now appear after every thread are driving me nuts! Normally, on my page, when viewing my friends pages, or when viewing the posts in a group, there would be the post and a link to the comments. Now, there's the post, a link to the number of people who like the post, a link to like the post, a link to the comments, and an edit box for writing your own comment. What's so difficult about just going to the comments link and writing there? So now, when I'm at my homepage, instead of just hitting f once to get to the search field, for example, I have to hit ctrl-end, to get to the bottom of the page, then shift-f to get to the search field. Plus, if I try to navigate through posts with the tab and shift-tab keys, I now have a bunch of unnecessary junk to go through for each one, before I can get to the next! So I'm thinking of either leaving or at least of not posting there for awhile. It's really a shame, as I have many good friends there and am on a number of groups, but it seems that FB is just getting more and more inaccessible. I'm looking for a site with the ability to post statuses (preferably without the short character limit of Twitter) as well as longer entries, like the notes feature on FB. I'd also like to find a place where I can publish my writings. I think my best bet for that is to make a new LJ, since this site is fully accessible, both in it's regular and mobile versions. Of course, I'll always keep this one, as it's about me and my life. My new one will be for essays, poems, stories, and random thoughts. I'm toying with the idea of naming it TheWriter, so it's easy for people to remember. Suggestions and/or recommendations would be appreciated for all of this.
