music for melancholia

Over at tumblr, wankyusername aka piecesofalice asked me to do a mix for my favourite director's latest movie. This was tricky because I had to pick a favourite director and I ended up with the *controversial* choice of Lars von Trier.

I have watched all of his films and always thought This dude gets it. I'm not completely sure what it is that I think he gets, but there's something about his aesthetics and thematics and insistence on honesty and originality that I admire.

He's also a dick. A whole big bag of dicks who is completely unable to fake social niceties and is fond of making a scene. He's like Kanye! But European and more creatively rigorous and probably a bigger dick.

Melancholia is von Trier's latest film. I know lots of people hate it, which is fine! This is one of those things, like Salman Rushdie or Margeret Atwood, where I get that it's not everyone's cup of tea; I love it to bits but I'm not going to evangelise like I do with Homestuck or Community or what have you.

Melancholia appears to appeal primarily to people who have suffered depression or have been in a close relationship with someone who has suffered depression. Even then, it's hit and miss, with opinions divided as to whether it's a good representation of depression.

I reckon it's one of the best films I've ever seen. When it ended I had a massive smile on my face. I couldn't explain to the people I was with why I was smiling at an actual total apocalypse, but I was thinking, This dude gets it.

Anyway, I made a mix!

I Smile and Smile and Smile, A Melancholia Mix

1. Reprise - DeVotchKa

(instrumental)

2. Home - Gil Scott-Heron & Jamie XX

Home is filled with pain and it

might not be such a bad idea

if i never, never went home again

3. St James Infirmary Blues - Louis Armstrong

I went down to St. James Infirmary,

Saw my baby there,

Stretched out on a long white table,

So cold, so sweet, so fair.

4. I Know You Are But What Am I? - Mogwai

(instrumental)

5. Souvenirs - Timber Timbre

(instrumental)

6. The House Wins - OK Go

If evil were a lesser breed than justice

After all these years

The righteous would have

Freed the world of sin

DL before the end comes?

crazy lars, music
