but I suddenly care about Person of Interest. Like, a lot? I started watching because everything else is on hiatus and I'm fully cognizant of its faults as a show, and by god there are faults, but I've watched all the episodes at least once, some twice, and I want the next episodes now, and I've read as much fic as I can find.
For the record, I don't actually recommend this show.
It's not like Breaking Bad or Community where I think everyone should watch it because it has a message or does important things with story telling or is really original. It's like being on meth: I can't stop but I don't want anyone else to be in my position, self-aware of all the things I'm doing wrong but unable to correct myself.
OK, the show isn't that bad, it's just rubbish dialogue and sometimes wooden acting and silly plots and stuff. But, but but but. Somehow that's exactly what I love? The rubbish dialogue and sometimes woodeness (looking at you JC, Michael Emerson only ever delivers gold) is because these guys have no idea how to be human. The heroes are a couple of anti-social high-functioning robots who have taken it upon themselves to save people who would probably lynch said heroes if they knew the extent to which their privacy has been violated.
This is not dissimilar to
that time I was watching The A-Team and decided everyone had PTSD. In the pilot, one of the heroes is an alcoholic hobo and the other, visibly physically disabled, has spent however many months internet stalking people he knows will soon be dead/in prison. Professor Stalk introduces himself by explaining that he knows exactly everything about Captain Hobo and he wants them to team up. And then they team up? And work very well together? They collect a corrupt cop with a heart of gold and get themselves stalked by the excellent Detective Carter, former army interrogator and honest to a fault and also a single mother, which we don't find out for nine episodes because it doesn't define her, yay!
Also it's set in New York and it actually looks like New York, like the New York I've been to, gritty and cold and full of excellent things and also crime. It's a proper character, rather than a sunny backdrop like it is in Suits or White Collar (but if someone wants to write those cross-overs, I will not complain). And they've handled the whole plot is reliant on 9/11 thing really well, by mentioning it as a fact of life, one that forever changed the course of history, but not something to dwell on in a maudlin fashion. No one says "9/11 terrible times brave firefighters etc" because obviously, obviously, terrible times brave firefighters, no one has to say it. Saying it is cloying.
This show does a lot of other spoon feeding, though. Plot points get spelt out over and over and over and it bugs me, how dumb the scriptwriters seem to think viewers are. On the other hand, there's masses of really subtle characterisation going on, all the conversations not being had re: how messed up the whole god-playing situation is and how the "heroes" basically made a suicide pact to be Batman together because they had nothing to loose. There are never conversations, but there are pretty much continual acknowledgments of the weirdness.
In other news, the soundtrack is by the excellent Ramin Djawadi, who scored Iron Man and Game of Thrones, dude has excellent musical taste. Have a
youtube playlist of featured songs! Massive Attack is on there twice!
Also also,
it's lithy's fault. TL;DR? Have an equation!
(shitty one-liners x (manpain + real physical pain) x (batman / 2) x surveillance fetish)
+ (strong female character x non-sexual representation)
+ (comic relief x a redemption arc)
+ (new york new york x realistic and non-obsessive mentions of 9/11)
= profit???
Anyway, I made a mix, which is my go to thinky thought action.
Yeah, yeah, you shut up and take your music.
Pumped Up Kicks - Foster the People (The Hood Internet Remix)
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks,
You better run, better run, outrun my gun.
All the other kids with the pumped up kicks,
You better run, better run, faster than my bullet
Robert's got a quick hand.
He'll look around the room,
He wont tell you his plan.
He's got a rolled cigarette.
Hanging out his mouth,
He's a cowboy kid.
NY is Killing Me - Gil Scott Heron & Jamie XX
New York is killing me,
Don't you know,
Killing me.
Big city ain't all
It's cracked up to be.
Lord have mercy,
Have mercy on me.
Manifest Destiny - Zola Jesus
I only know one place where I have to be
And it's gotta be with you
I'm on my way now
So you gotta help me out
You gotta make it out for me
How could we survive?
Yeah I'll think about the kids
Just let your speed arrive
Yeah don't worry about the rest
No One Does It Like You - Department Of Eagles
And in the morning cold
You don't need to have an alibi
And in the morning cold
You don't need to breathe so easy
I laughed so hard I fell down
I cursed these legs I walked on
Lonesome Hunter - Timber Timbre
What did that bad man put in you?
Did those rotten kids cross a line?
I'm afraid I'll never understand baby
I'm so sorry you had such a bad time
well I had done some truly awful things
and you must be very terrified
well you have ever reason to be frightened
Since you've been reading my mind
How To Embrace A Swamp Creature - The Mountain Goats
Got out of bed, could not remember my own name
Condemned to walk the soil amongst all creatures wild and tame
Go where I go, do what I must
Crawl starving on my belly
Licking up the dry dust
I see the light in your window
Ride the elevator to the sixth floor
Stand with my arms at my sides as you open up the door
But I'm out of my element, I can't breathe
A Real Hero - College
Back against the wall and odds
With the strength of a will and a cause
Your pursuits are called outstanding
You're emotionally complex
Against the grain of dystopic claims
Not the thoughts your actions entertain
Gamma Ray - Beck
If I could hold, hold out for now
With these icecaps melting down
With the transistor sound
And my Chevrolet terraplane
Going around around around
Come on little gamma ray
Standing in a hurricane
Your brains are bored like a refugee
From a houses that's burning
And the heat wave's calling your name
