The music meme

Mar 29, 2010 11:42

You can learn a lot about someone from the music they listen to. Here's the game: hit shuffle on your music player, and write down the first 25 songs that come up. No cheating or skipping songs.

1. Fuck the Pain Away - Peaches
Which, weird coincidence. But I do love this song.

2. Mango Tree - Angus & Julia Stone
Yay dippy hippy mildly incestuous love songs with snare drum!

3. Virginia Avenue - Tom Waits
Mmmmm-hmmmm, feel that blues bass and alto sax and voice made out of a thousand black coffees and a billion cigarettes.

4. Right Place Wrong Time - Dr John
I think this is from the soundtrack to Sahara, which I have never seen because it looks like it sucks. I get at least half my music from fanmixes, so.

5. I'm Sleeping in a Submarine - Arcade Fire
I love bands with too many people in them, when the whole thing becomes a symphonic cacophony of obscure instruments and six part harmonies.

6. Good Omens (part 80) - Terrry Pratchett & Neil Gaiman
I like books, shut up. I'm not actually sure who reads this, because I pirated it, but they're good.

7. The Garden - Mirah
This is a little like the white girl's Love Lockdown (auto tuned yet half a cappella, angry at a lost love) only much, much better.

8. One More Mouth - Josh Ritter
I maintain Josh Ritter is the result of some mad scientist trying to combine Bob Dylan with Bruce Springsteen, which shouldn't have worked but kind of does.

9. Comfortably Numb - Scissor Sisters
This is one of those occasions I prefer the cover to the original. Not because it's a better song, but because it was one of the last songs performed by Pink Floyd mk II (sans Barrett) before they broke up proper, and it breaks my heart.

10. Karen - The National
I learnt about The National on FBi, Sydney's alterni-indie music station. It was my first time listening to the station and this was on the album of the week. It was the first time I bought a cd off Amazon, too.

11. Pump It - Black Eyed Peas
Hey, I liked the Black Eyed Peas back before they had Fergie. That's, uh, that's not why I have this song.

12. Night Time (What Kind of Breeze Do You Blow Extended Edit) - The XX
YOU SHOULD ALL LISTEN TO THIS BAND. British trance-pop with clever lyrics and ghostly vocals.

13. Mocking Bird - Current 93
Imagine if the guy who narrates the Night Garden started telling really creepy stories, with vaguely occult piano backing. It's awesome.

14. Umbrella - Marie Digby
I am a little obsessed with finding covers to pop songs. This is a slightly countrified version of Rhianna's eh-eh-eh hit.

15. Skid Row Wine - Maggie Estep & The Spitters
Sounds like if Patti Smith and Nine Inch Nails collaborated. From Kicks Joy Darkness, the Kerouac tribute album. It's also got Hunter Thompson reading his Ode to Jack ("Five dogs went into the wilderness. Only one came back. Three dogs were killed by guinea worm. One was killed by you, Jack Kerouac. Y'see, Jack was an artist in all things. I admire the dog thing most of all." *cue sound tech laughing his ass off*) and Johnny Depp saying "Kerouac" over and over with a bunch of reverb. It's really good.

16. Four Cigarettes - Malcolm Middleton
It's essentially a Scottish torch song from that guy who used to be half of Arab Strap.

17. Chasing Cars - Snow Patrol
Yup. I'm not going to justify that. At all.

18. The Goon Show, 22/01/52
It's politically incorrect and outdated and confusing because they were all drunk or crazy or both and I love it with all my heart.

19. Hey Ya - Outkast
Ah, who could ever forget those classic, perennial life lessons? How would I know what to shake it like without this song?

20. We're In Thunderstorm - Gentlemen Reg
I picked up the album on the strength of a single track, which I kind of regret. It's sort of 80's revival but less original.

21. It's Not a Talk Show - Bill Hicks
Dude, there is a lot on this music meme that isn't music. It's Bill back in 1993, but the subject matter, pitching his TV show, "Let's Hunt and Kill Billy Ray Cyrus", is still topical.

22. I Swallowed Hard, Like I Understood - 63daysofstatic
I love that most of this band's titles are longer then the songs.

23. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, ep. 7 - Douglas Adams
Not even joking, I do have music, I really do. This is the awesome classic radio play, with its Beatles inspired theme tune.

24. Beatific - Buck 65
Canadian hip-hop, whaaaaaat. Dude mentions Charlie Parker and Che Guevara in the same breath.

25. The Bagman's Gambit - The Decemberists
I love you, Decemberists, and your novel length songs. I love you a bunch.

If anyone wants anything, comment and I'll upload/link.
