Yesterday
mrrules took me up to Napa. Neither of us had ever been, so it was quite an adventure. We wandered around aimlessly for a while, and eventually stopped at a grocery store to ask for directions. The grocery store was quite an experience in and of itself. They were instantly helpful, abandoning their registers to wander off with us, and to recommend places to eat and drink. I also got to be one of the "couple from Australia" for a while. I don't mind not looking American all the time. Even the customers got involved in making recommendations. The people really are what makes towns interesting.
For lunch we went to Domaine Chandon. Absolutely wonderful fish, and a bottle of champagne (technically sparkling wine, since it was grown in California). Then we did some wine tasting, and discovered that all the wineries close early in the winter. They all closed at 4 or 5. It was a misty day, and a little chilly, and the vineyards were beautiful.
Now that we know where to go I'd love to make it out there again sometime. We called this one a reconnaissance mission.
