SIFF 2008

Ah, that time of year has come again. My attendance has been declining in the last few years as I've become much busier, but I think I would still like to try and make a few films. While talking to my friend about it (and some films he was interested in checking out), I decided I'd tighten my scope this year and just limit myself to stand-by categories rather than being explorative. While I enjoy that aspect of attending SIFF, I think I just don't have time for that anymore. I just looked at films from Japan and Hong Kong (actually, I looked at China and Taiwan as well, but nothing popped there for me). Here's what I came up with:

Vexille, from the same team (animation, I'd guess; I can't tell from comparing staff on ANN) behind the recent Appleseed movies. I really like that style of animation and I've had a positive recommendation. I'd have to see the 5/25 9:30p show.

Mad Detective. It's by Johnny To, that's an easy enough sell for me ^_^ I'd have to see the 6/3 7p show.

The site claims Sparrow has "a touch of Cary Grant and Stanley Donen," which makes me curious right there. I mean, you're basically referencing Charade, my all time favorite movie, by saying that. Also, it's directed by Johnny To and has Simon Yam in it. That one'd have to be the 6/2 9p show.

Triangle is a collaboration of the triumvirate of Tsui Hark, Ringo Lam, and Johnny To, so another easy sell to me. That'd have to be the 6/15 9p show.

I hope I can make all of these. More difficult than the time scheduling will be swallowing the gas cost though... ^^;; If anyone else is interested in these movies, let me know so we can meet up for them.
