THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE
They provide the best, most complete weather forecasts. Hands down.
I'm really glad that Sen. Rick Santorum failed mierably in 2005 when he tried to pass a law that would prohibit the National Weather Service from making its forecasts available to the public except during weather emergencies. His idea was that the government shouldn't be allowed to compete with private companies that also provide forecasts. So basically our tax money would go to collect weather data and to pay the salaries of meteorologists, but we couldn't benefit from it directly--only "big weather" could. Oh, and it's just a coincidence that AccuWeather, one of the largest commercial forecast services, donated a bunch of money to his last senate campaign.
After the postal service, the National Weather Service is my favorite part of the federal government.
