I was awakened this morning with the news that my middle sister Colleen, niece Adrianne, and nephew Adam Benjamin had been involved in a serious car wreck last night. Adrianne was driving, and they were on a very bad stretch of county road in rural Porter County, when they hit a patch of ice that was covered with fresh snow. They went off the road into a deep ditch, and my sister was knocked unconscious. Adrianne had the presence of mind to climb out of the driver's seat, pull my sister out, and then go back in for her 2-year-old brother, who was underwater as the car was sinking into the ditch. Luckily, Colleen had been talking to my eldest niece, Amber, at the time of the wreck, and Amber immediately called my younger sister, Christine, who, along with my brother-in-law Tim, went out looking for the accident. Adrianne was standing in the middle of Smoke Road---this road, also known as Meridian, runs almost the entire length of the county, and though it is fairly heavily traveled, it is not well-maintained, and through many stretches, like the one they were on, is bordered by deep ditches and empty fields or marshland---screaming at the top of her lungs for help. Both cell phones, apparently, had gone down with the car.
Adrianne and Adam were treated for minor injuries and mild hypothermia and released. Colleen, however, is unconscious with bleeding around her brain. We do not know anything more right now.
Your good thoughts and prayers are requested for my sister, her children and husband, and for my family in general. Thanks.
What is so strange, and I hesitate to say anything about it because I am so, well, uncertain and somewhat disturbed, is that I knew, at least five days ago that someone in my family was going to have a CAT scan soon, and that there would be bleeding around the brain. I knew that there was going to be an accident, I just did not know who would be involved. Actually, I thought that it was my uncle. These sorts of episodes happen every couple months, and they are usually vague and not very helpful. As in this case...
