After months of waiting, I finally have it; Regina Spektor's album Far. HURRAH!
It's just as wonderful as I thought it would be, despite some, in my opinion, unnecessary producer meddling in some of the old songs. Folding Chair was always one of my favourites; uplifting and strangely moving, in a way, but the changes made to it on the album version make me not want to listen to it at all; the too-loud drums, the lack of emotion compared to the original, and the restrictive rhythm. Regina can do what she likes, and her voice remains perfect, but I loved the original so much that it's hard to accept this new version.
Two Birds and Machine didn't grab me on first listen, but the rest of it? WOW. From the very start, the lyrics are strange, mystical, lyrical; Regina putting one of her best talents to work. The first song on the album is The Calculation, and I'd always envisioned it, before I heard it, as a slow, sly piece; so to hear it as something upbeat and cheerful was a lovely surprise. Eet, Dance Anthem of the 80's and Laughing With remain superb after so many listens (as I'd seen the music videos); I can't listen to the opening chords of Eet without getting a lump in my throat; it's crazy.
My favourite ones that I haven't heard before have to be Human of the Year, which is incredibly haunting, and Regina uses her voice in a brilliant way, and One More Time With Feeling, which, I can already tell, will automatically cheer me up if I ever listen to it when I'm down. It's inspirational, it's matter-of-fact, it's bouncy. I love it!
So, all in all, YAY! It merits another listen or fifty over the next few days, methinks; it's also a joy to finally be able to skip down the street listening to Dance Anthem of the 80's; it's possibly the most catchy song in the world.
Right, I'm off to rub out all the notes in my English books and procrastinate from packing for my mini-Europe sojurn. Hurrah!
