Stephen Fry's book Stephen Fry in America is like enjoying a Christmas present very slowly, so that it'll last longer, and you're filled with glee to know that there's more to go. It's a great chunky hardback (so big it won't fit on my bookshelf), filled with pictures and factoids and portraits about his travels through all fifty states, and the tone is so utterly Stephen. He's witty, he's cutting, he's funny, but at the same time he possesses an unabashed admiration for the incredible diversity surrounding him on his travels, and lets the states speak for themselves rather than trying to reflect his own opinion back on the reader. He's a perfect, compelling narrator; I read sixty pages and only registered when I realised we'd moved onto New York State.
He's willing to give every activity a try wherever he goes, so I'm only on New York and he's already dressed up in an emergency Submariner's outfit, gone lobster-catching in Maine (his description of the lobster dinner made my mouth water. Mmm. I would love to go there.), made his own brand of ice cream at Ben and Jerry's, and spent a day on the campaign trail with Mitt Romney. And there's still more to come!
It still smells fresh from the bookshop, too; I'm savouring that smell until it goes away. I work on the tills at WHSmiths, but nothing beats doing delivery, and cutting into an unopened box of books.
Just had a flick through, and eeee! So much more to go! Brilliant, but I'd feel terrible if I asked Stephen to sign it without having finished it. I shall get on it. Right after I stop procrastinating and FINISH THIS BLOODY POLITICS HOMEWORK.
