I'm thinking base stat + 2d6 (adjusted) for Hero & opposition (unless specific target number).

Roll is 2d6, if no duplicates that is the roll value. If doubles are rolled, take single value (eg, snake eyes is 1, box cars is 6) and re-roll adding the value (doubles continue).

Creates a bottom-heavy curve with a distribution of 'critical' rolls at the low end, thus preventing critical=autosuccess.
