“And this will be your desk,” Michael Scott said as he gestured at an empty desk next to a young Indian woman sitting in the back corner of the office.
“Hi, I’m Kelly,” the woman said cheerfully. “It is so cool to have someone back here with me. The last HR guy quit like six months ago and I haven’t had anyone to talk to since like forever.”
“Toby,” he said with a pleasant smile despite the sense of foreboding he was getting from the situation. He’d only been on the job for fifteen minutes now and he could tell that Michael Scott did not like him and had no intention to help him in any way, shape or form. He was used to it though, the last branch he’d been at hadn’t been the nicest either. There was something about the company and its HR people.
“Well my job here is done so just do whatever it is you do and don’t bother me or any of my employees, OK?” Michael said with a note of childish finality.
“Actually, I’d really like to meet the other people working here so I can get to know them and see-“
“No, no, no! I will not allow your kind to interact with my employees. They have enough on their plate as it is and I don’t want to depress them by introducing them to a loser like you.”
“Michael, its part of my job to-“
Michael sighed loudly, his face showing pure annoyance with each word Toby uttered. “Fine, fine, OK. Listen up everyone. Corporate has decided that we need somebody here to tone down the fun in this office so they’ve given us this guy. Let me tell you something though. I will fight with every ounce of strength I have to not let this guy ruin it for all of us, OK? So no worries.”
Most of the employees gave Michael a look of confusion, while a few didn’t seem to even break from their work. One gave a standing ovation.
“All right,” Michael said and then went back to his office leaving a rather mortified Toby standing beside an empty desk.
After a moment of trying to decide whether or not to just leave and move back to New York with Susan and Sasha he chose to sit down.
“Um, so you should have a seat and get your desk ready or whatever. I mean I have some empty cabinets for you and I totally don’t think you’re a loser. Nobody listens to Michael, so don’t take it personally. He’s just a jerk sometimes,” Kelly said.
Toby nodded and sat down, placing his bag beside him on the floor. He could do this. He’d dealt with people like Michael before.
“I’m going to get a soda. Do you want anything?” Kelly asked him.
He rarely drank sodas. He’d always been more of a mineral water person, but he nodded nonetheless and handed her some spare change he’d had in his pocket. “ Orange, if your machine has it.”
“No way.”
“What?”
“I love orange. That is so awesome! It’s totally the best flavor. Like Jim thinks its all about grape and Pam just drinks diet coke, which is so boring, but now I’ve got someone on my side. That is so cool!”
For a moment Toby couldn’t believe that a person could be this ecstatic about sharing the same soda preference, but he smiled back anyways. “Yeah.”
Kelly gave him a smile and then walked off to the break room. At least he’d made one friend today.
