These things always seem to happen when I'm exhausted and/or can't think straight (though, to be fair, that's pretty often these days.)
Some people may have heard about the new racefail in SPN fandom; maybe because they're in that specific fandom, maybe because they're in the more aware parts of fandom at large.
I'd like to give my thoughts, in the hopes that I manage to hit that combination of syllables that makes someone think "actually, they're right, this isn't okay..." but I don't have enough unscrambled words.
However, to paraphrase
starlurker here, I may not have the words myself, but I can do my best to make others heard. (the rest of that post is also excellent.)
amazonziti has an excellent link round-up
here. Among them:
bossymarmalade has picked out quotes
here, so you can see some of what's wrong with the fic without going through 80k words (and from what I understand it's been removed.)
There are many other posts there with a lot of information.
facetofcathy has a good post
here for those who ask how this could happen.
This is the second time it's happened that I've heard of (and I am not an SPN fan) in the SPN fandom alone. Even after the explosion last time, people were still ignorant enough to write the same kind of story, to take pictures of the actual disaster and photoshop the actors onto them.
But this isn't a problem that's restricted to Supernatural RPF, it's endemic. It's not even restricted to fandom, but that doesn't mean that fandom should throw their hands up and say "pro-fic/movies do it, why can't we?" The answer to that question has been given, repeatedly, in both this instance of Fandom Racefail and many others.
People are arguing that it's 'just' ignorance on the author and artist's part, and they should be left alone so it can die down. Well if it's 'just' ignorance then lets spread the information as far as possible, lets have the next person who sees a disaster and thinks "WOW, GREAT BACKDROP!" remember this and stop. Or maybe the artist they send the fic to will say "Um, hang on, this is offensive" and link them back to
amazonziti's entry. Or maybe their beta reader will. Or someone on their flist will when they hear about it. Or maybe the mods in charge of the challenge will see the prompt and feel alarm bells go off in their heads and check the fic (before anyone pulls out the "so you're saying they should have pulled the fic just because it's set in Haiti,
drvsilla has a good post
here.)
Ignorance may be bliss, but it's not a basic right that other people are required to respect. And when the ignorance is hurting a lot of people then being protective of the bliss bubble is a problem.
I'm not sure how many spoons I have available for discussion, so please be patient if you absolutely have to argue with me.
