i just came up with another thing that will help get rid of more of shit i own.. and i figured that i should put it in writing so when i happen back upon this entry in a few months, i'll be all "ohhh yeahhh" and get rid of MORE shit...
this may sound completely obvious to normal people with normal amounts of things and clothing, but not to me, apparently, because i keep everything. everything. (i call it a good day when i can get rid of a FEW old Value Village tee shirts from high school and maybe a pair of shoes that hurt my feet.)
so this little trick will be very important for me to keep in mind:
walk into your closet. pick out anything, everything, one at a time, and think back to the last time you wore it. then, think about the next time you would be likely to wear it. if it is in the last week/month, then put it back on the hanger or fold it back up and stick it back into the drawer. if, however, this garment has not been worn, or will not be worn for quite some time, do NOT GO TRY IT ON IN THE MIRROR. the mirror is deceiving, because you forget that just because it may look nice in the mirror, it still doesn't mean that you will wear it or should keep it. therefore, instead of trying it on or holding it up to yourself in the mirror, THINK ABOUT WHAT ELSE YOU MAY WEAR WITH IT, and IF YOU WILL WEAR IT IN THIS LIFETIME AGAIN. the chances are that, no, you will not. and if you do, it will be out of guilt of having it so long and you will be not only wearing something you don't even want to wear, but you are denying all of the OTHER BEAUTIFUL WONDERFUL CLOTHING LEFT IN THE CLOSET.
okay now seriously. go back in there. pick something up that you haven't worn in weeks, months, ages...
