I am flabbergasted. I got a perfect score on my dialogue in Chinese last week.
The teacher always said they'd yell at him if he gave a perfect score, wanting to know if it was absolutely perfect in every way. We wrote the dialogue right before class started, practiced it a little, and I was drowsy through the whole performance.
I am flabbergasted. Maybe he mismarked it.
In other news, did I ever mention Dancesport? Absolutely fabulous. I enjoyed the competition last winter, but this was something else. Since I didn't compete myself (still sad), I had to spend at least five hours there, so I went in for the bushel and bought double-day tickets. I was there for at least ten hours.
It's neat to go when you've been in the ballroom dance program for a while -- I think I knew at least one person in every event but beginning social. I ran into people I haven't seen in forever, and even got to sit next to a friend for the entire evening social, giving me someone to bounce critiques and admiration off of.
I don't know how the judges do it, or even what they're doing sometimes. If someone asked me to talk about the gold bar latin class dancing rumba, all I could hope for would be to do something more than babble helplessly at them. I managed to pick out the first place couple a couple rounds back, but otherwise... I wish desperately that I could dance like that, but I can't imagine ever being that good. How do they keep track of everything as they move from foot to foot? Do they just think faster than everyone else? And how do they manage to do it in latin sandals? It's supposed to make it easier, I know, but my feet hurt badly after half an hour. They really are the most incredible athletes.
Of course, some of them have been training since elementary school -- do you know it's not unheard of for parents in Utah to sign exclusive contracts with past championships to teach their kids, two or three hours a day? Then they practice. I saw kids as little as four years old on that floor. Adorable, and it pays off -- some dance better than the adults -- but wow. Sorry to my future kids, but they are not devoted their entire existence to anything until they're old enough to tie their own shoes.
And then, as the crowning jewel of the weekend, I got to see six fabulous showcase routines by Paul Richardson and Olga Radionova. Paso Doble is now my unrequited love.
So, Sandy's coming on Friday, then we'll drive home for the holiday. I hope everyone gets to see family this time of year -- I have been at school for so long, I am definitely wearing out. I can't wait to be home.
