YOU, TOO, COME TO HER BOSOM. ...though, the on joke applies, too. i mean -

BECAUSE LAVI, REALLY SPECIAL. shirley definitely has degrees of how she likes people because (excuse me as i quote myself here) her baseline emotions are, actually, positive and amiable because negativity is more effort than she has or cares to put in, anyway. i mean, you know, it is incredibly hard for her to hate anyone, but at the same time, it is incredibly hard for her to unconditionally, no special meanings attached like someone, too. ...lavi has managed that.

which is probably not obvious but her interactions with everyone in anatole is defined by how much they remind her of her comrades. her entire after-existence has been fueled by guilt, and she has had so few people to talk for longer than ten minutes that this is how she interacts with the world at large now. she has never once thought of lavi in terms of them, though. partly because this habit surfaced when she was really getting use to mass amounts of people and partly because of...something, she isn't sure. (it was liking him even then, on the level of "I ENJOY YOU BEING AROUND.")

so the fact she has given him a duck named after her comrades, instead, is...SOMETHING, LMFAO. damia would have been considered the secondary medic of their group, so besides shirley's duty as the primary healer causing her to be v personal about her comrades, she definitely looked after damia as a student, too. she wasn't always there for damia because shirley was p involved in the war efforts, but man, she tried.

so damia the duck is weirdly symbolic of shirley's acceptance of him as an actual relationship and her concern for him as a bookman apprentice (because after what happened to damia the person, she just...DOESN'T WANT THIS HAPPENING TO LAVI DON'T DIE).

shirley kind of realizes this and kind of doesn't. she still is content with the way things are, and rn, her primary concerns are figuring out her purposes in anatole and if she wants to accept them. when she gets there, the fact she just...has this pure feeling of fondness is not going to scare. the implications that she abandoning a plethora of issues related to her comrades will, though. RIDICULOUS, W/E. (she will know it, too.)

He'll try not to die, there are no promises. But Rhode does have a 'get out of jail free' card for him to use because of what he told her. Not sure how valid it'll be with Allen gone now but we'll see.
