Hm.

Kevin Paul Dupont, Hockey Hall of Fame writer for The Boston Globe, posts on a hockey forum that I frequent. Dupont posted the following as a response to a thread a young journalist started about his/her first published article:

Sincere congrats, [name removed].

Those of us in the biz, be it for a day or a lifetime, well remember our first byline. It will hold a special place in your memory for the remainder of your career.

I wish I could go on here about what a wonderful journey you've begun. Truth is, the media business today is nearly the equivalent of the ongoing BP mess in the Gulf. Think of yourself in that sea, having just boarded the Titanic. Don't ignore the smell, or that nasty bump you just felt in the hull.

I would encourage anyone and everyone to steer clear, WAY clear, and opt for a far better career choice. Not print. Not radio. Not TV. And I am willing to bet if you talk to anyone in the business over age 40, you would receive the same advice. If you have the talent to succeed in this business, far better to appoint those talents to a career path that has the potential to reward you for your service and talents.

A little cynical, but the guy is the best of the best. I don't think like that at all now -- then again, technically I work in public relations. But I guess we'll have to see how I feel in 17 years.
