Not reading Serah because I still haven't played past XIII (I started XIII-2 but my PS3 is not convenient to play at all lol). But I have a feeling I will like her. I liked her little parts in XIII and honestly I love XIII's characters in general (anyone who hates that game can fight me) so I'm sure I'll like her.

Aerith is such a fun character. I love her a lot. Of all the FF7 characters, she felt the most real to me. Instead of just boiling down to her trope/role, she was bursting with personality. She had the complexity and enthusiasm you'd expect from an actual young woman. Writing characters like that is hard, so I really appreciate her a lot. Definitely my fav FF7 gal. She's probably my favorite character even though I always say Barret (though I love Barret a lot). I'm sad how her personality was dulled down so much for Kingdom Hearts btw -_-;

Not reading Lightning for same reason as Serah but I love her so muchhhhhhhhhh. Her relationship with Hope over the course of the game is like my FAVORITE EVER and omgggggggggggg Lightning *_*

Ashe I agree with 100%. I hated her my first time through the game because I thought she was rude (I'm usually super shallow and judge characters based on their first impressions and don't get over that for a long time) but over time I've come to love her for her depth. I think she feels just as 'real' as Aerith, and she's very relatable despite being in such fantastic situations that I'd never be in IRL.

Also I'd like to report an error. You put Dagger at #6. I understand the mistake, though. She's at the bottom of the entry so you probably thought this was the #5-#1 post, where she should be at the bottom because she is #1.

You already know my feelings on Dagger so I won't really elaborate them since I finished that FF9 playthrough pretty recently. And I would be echoing what you've already said, too.

But she is my favorite FF character of all time and I love her sooooooo much. And yeah I'd definitely consider her more important to the story than Zidane -- other than the end suddenly being about Zidane and Kuja, I feel like 95% of the game is about Dagger in the same way that FF12 is really about Ashe.

Also it bothers me to call her Garnet because like everyone calls her Dagger for a vast majority of the game, her name is Dagger in gameplay aspects, and Dagger is the "persona" she ultimately becomes??? And Garnet is not even her real name anyway so?!??!?? But you know my feelings on that too lmao. It bugs me how the fandom and even Square has adopted Garnet as the name used to refer to her in general?!?!?

Also this is part 2 wtf I must have missed part 1????????????? I get email notifs every time you update so???

Serah’s pretty great. XIII-2 made her unique, and did a lot of cool things with her. I think you’ll enjoy her. (XIII-2 also gives us a really great new antagonist in Caius, who is far more interesting than Barthandelus, and is a little more intuitive in terms of combat, so that’s nice)

Aerith really does feel like an actual person, though I’d argue that Tifa is just as complex and well-written (and “real”). It’s pretty incredible, when you think about it. I agree about Aerith in KH. Like with Cloud (who is a great character IMO but has been beaten down into a boring mass of ugh in so many of his other appearances), she tends to become bland when she appears elsewhere. I liked her in Advent Children, for what it was, but was less impressed with her in Crisis Core. I’ve also been consistently unimpressed with her English VA work, something not helped by the fact she’s had like three different actresses.

Man, you’re right. I might’ve screwed up with Dagger’s placement. Honestly, the top six were so hard for me to order than they could technically be ordered in almost any way and I’d be good with it. In terms of narrative importance she’s basically the same as Ashe/Yuna. 90% of the game is about them.

It bugs me when people exclusively call her “Garnet” too (Or they call her Sarah, which just sounds pretentious AF). Here I did it to make the distinction between ‘Garnet, the Princess’ and ‘Dagger, the Person’, which tends to be how I feel about it. Ironically, ‘Garnet’ is the role she takes on, and ‘Dagger’ is her “true self”.

I’d say Square might refer to her as ‘Garnet’ to avoid spoilers... but she takes on the name ‘Dagger’ like three hours into the game. It would be like marketing Ashe as ‘Amalia’ haha.
