Fandoms as relationships meme! \o/

Aug 23, 2019 22:35

I was skulking through Dreamwidth keyword search yesterday and noticed a couple of people having fun with this thing, which has apparently been around since 2011 at least (the earliest source I can find doesn't sound like it's the original).

The one who seduced you, screwed you over, broke your heart in a million pieces, and laughed about it:

BBC Sherlock (show canon).

The old flame you don't see very often any more but whom you still really enjoy getting together with for a few drinks and maybe a pleasant nostalgic romp:

Harry Potter?

The mysterious dark one whom you used to sit up with talking until 3 AM at weird coffee houses and with whom you were quite smitten until you realized they really were fucking creepy:

Twilight.

The one you spent a whole weekend in bed with and who drank up all your liquor and whom you'd still really like to get with again, although you're relieved they don't actually live in town:

Maybe that phase of listening to the entire "Hamilton" soundtrack multiple times a week, sometimes more than once a day, qualifies.

The steady:

BtVS. "Steady"? Dude, we're married. *g* Two-year anniversary this coming December, and that's not counting the two-year engagement and one year of casual dating before that. (It's an open marriage. Buffyverse has rather more other fans than I do other fandoms, but that's okay. They have needs. Every time I read a crossover, it's me and Buffyverse having a threesome with the other fandom. I bet you're wishing I'd leave the poor metaphor alone right about now.)

The alluring stranger whom you've flirted with at parties but have never gotten really serious with:

Les Mis. Somewhere in an alternate universe, I'm elbow deep in that fandom just like I am in my actual fandom in this universe.

The one you hang out with and have vague fantasies about maybe having a thing with, but ultimately you're just good buddies:

Well, I recently read 250 K in Pride & Prejudice fic, and I vaguely enjoyed the movie, and I keep thinking I should probably read more Austen at some point, so... that.

Slightly differently, there's Ursula Le Guin, several of whose books have irrevocably become part of my soul, but I've never really considered being actively fannish about any of them, apart from making crack [redacted] that one time. It's probably in part a timing thing, in part that I know she wasn't comfortable with the idea of fanfic. So that's more like... the deep and life-changing friendship that is more important than some romances. Discworld could go in this category too, in a somewhat more laid-back way.

The one your friends keep introducing you to and who seems like a hell of a cool person except it's never really gone anywhere:

Everything Neil Gaiman ever wrote. It honestly baffles me why I've read so little of him.

Oh, OMG! The Good Place sounds like a great time, as well.

The one who's slept with all your friends, and you keep looking at them and thinking, "How the hell did they land all these cool people?"

Supernatural. How? (I've only seen a couple of episodes. There were guys and guns. *shrugs*)

The one who gave you the best damned summer of your life and against whom you measure all other potential partners:

BBC Sherlock fandom during the 2-year hiatus pre-Reichenbach. Buuut I've gotta say the current summer of my life is also excellent.

The one you recently met at a party and would like to get to know better:

I could say Good Omens. (I haven't seen the show yet, but when I do, I'm going to dye my hair red and stealth cosplay a snake for months, I can just feel it. Maybe even before watching the show.)

The old flame that you wouldn't totally object to hooking up with again for a one night romp if only they'd clean up a bit:

Uh, Pirates of the Caribbean? I mean, Jack Sparrow canonically has syphilis.

Your hot new flame:

It's Good Omens. I may or may not be reading weird slash as you read this post.

The one who stole your significant other:

I'm sure Good Omens has stolen everyone's significant others and their cats at this point.
