[ The first thing McCoy did when when that "Mandatory Rest Day" was lifted was make sure that Northern Sickbay was in tip-top shape. Being the Commander had it's perks and it's downfalls, of course. He felt like he was babysitting himself at times (which was as weird as it sounded). Once he was content with how it was arranged, he gave the orders ( Read more... )

[It was always more difficult than it really needed to be to hunt down his captain. Even so, this seemed to be a good place to start. He didn't find exactly who he was looking for, but spotted another familiar face and approached, stood at a respectful distance- he was intruding, after all.]

I assume you are enjoying yourself, doctor.

Always trying to. Seems like there's less damn peace on this station than on the Enterprise.

[ None the less the doctor motioned for him to join him. ]

This does seem to be the case. The sense of urgency here is somewhat different.

[He nodded once and sat across from the doctor, folding his hands on the table in front of him.]

The great adventure of "trying to find our way home." How poetic. Like god damn Noah's Ark.

I suppose so. It is somewhat necessary, however.

[He paused then, affixing a somewhat curious look somewhere slightly off to the doctor's right.]

I am curious, doctor, if I might ask something of a personal question.

[ McCoy raised his eyebrows. Oh, this could be a joy. ]

I don't see why that would be a problem, Spock. Never could keep your Vulcan mind in line anyways.

[Again a pause as he tried to articulate the particular thought he was trying to convey.]

How...close are you? In your time. You and Jim and -

[It was awkward to say, but there really wasn't another way to say it.]

- and me.

[ There was a silence as he folded his hands on the table and leaned forward. Spock wanted to know close the three of them were? And here he figured nothing would be different between them. ]

May I be so bold to ask what brought this on?

It is...a matter of practical curiosity.

Well, I don't buy that answer. I know you too damn well. But I'll be kind enough to indulge your "curiousity."

[ The older McCoy half shrugged. ]

You could say we three are the best of friends. As much of a friend as I'm going to admit it about you two. Traveled the damn universe babysitting both of you and keeping you out of trouble. Risked my neck for you both as well.

My thanks for your indulgence.

You "risked your neck." How so?

Though I suppose you have to like Jim and I equally. With what happened with Genesis.

"Genesis." You have mentioned this before. What exactly is it?

[ That made the old doctor sit back in his seat. A heavy sigh came out as he kept his hands on the table. Here he thought he'd never tell the tale. ]

Genesis was a Project in order to create life from lifelessness.
