[ perched on the ledge of one of the great windows in one of the halls of the habitat ring, far from the promenade and away from where those trapped on the station have taken up residence, sits one captain jean-luc picard. there's an alien flute in hand that he's playing, filling the adjoining corridors with a soft, sweet melody. ]

[ after meeting captain kirk, and q, janeway had given herself a little time to take things in, after finding the nearest replicator for a cup of coffee. it was needed, especially with the headache forming - she couldn't tell if that was due to the situation or something else that she hadn't yet considered. taking the coffee with her as she walked, and absorbed what she'd been told, janeway gave herself a moment to look around the place. she couldn't begin to think of how to describe the place, and may need to take up kirk's advice of talking to holly. an artifical intelligence database, that would be something that starfleet would love to investigate, though apparently they created it. either admiral paris had been holding out on something else was going on.

when she heard the soft melody she turned her head, giving a curious glance to where it was coming from. and then a small smile. there was no mistaking who it was, though this was a talent that wasn't kept in his file. walking over, smile still there she listened, not wanting to completely disturb him ]

[ it was a talent jean-luc made sure wasn't included in his file, being that it wasn't a talent that was originally his. the knowledge of how to play the ressikan flute had been put into his head, along with the memories of a culture that had been extinct for thousands of years. it seemed fate had a way with putting things in his head that he never asked for, not that he complained much about this flute or the stories that came with it.

he stopped playing and turned his attention to the captain. she was vaguely familiar and wore a uniform that was only a year or two out of date. they'd only just made the change to the style of uniform jean-luc wore now. he offered her a kind, professional smile and a nod. ]

Captain.

Jean-Luc Picard.

[ it was an honour. whether she'd met the man before or not wasn't the point. during some of her situations captain picard's logs had been some of the most frequently referred to, along with a few other noted captains, hoping for a little bit of inspiration - the enterprise seemed to get into situations as frequently as voyager did ]

Captain Kirk mentioned that you were here.

Yes, that's right.

[ he nodded and found himself at a loss when it came to putting a name to her face. he knew he'd seen it somewhere, but he just couldn't put his finger on it. ]

You'll have to forgive me if we've met before, but your name seems to be escaping me, Captain.

I'm not quite sure that we have Captain.

[ or if they had they hadn't been introduced, or been in the place long enough for that ]

Captain Kathryn Janeway of the Starship Voyager. It's a pleasure to meet you.

[ a momentary look of surprise passed over the elder captain's features. voyager? that's where he knew that face -- starfleet intelligence logs that he was privy to, as well as general federation news. her ship had been lost in the badlands two years ago.

he stood and held out the hand that wasn't holding the flute to her. ]

Oh, the pleasure's all mine, Captain. It is a great relief to know that you and your crew are safe -- at least, I hope that my assuming so is correct.

[ janeway swapped her coffee to the other hand, shaking his before sitting by him, placing her cup next to her ]

We've had our share of pinches, but we've managed to pull through.

Oh, that I can understand. I've been in my share of pinches. I suppose we can count this station and the anomaly tied into it as one of them.

Might I inquire as to what year it is for you, Captain?

[ janeway smiled at that, being able to remember some parts of his logs by word due to how many times she'd read them and tried to apply similar tactics ]

It's certainly one for the logs, something Starfleet would enjoy hearing about.

It's 2377. I've heard that there are many alternate timelines here.

[ that earned a laugh from jean-luc. ]

Oh, I'm sure it would. Temporal Investigations is going to love hearing that I've got myself caught up in yet another temporal anomaly and are going to be thrilled to hear that James T. Kirk was involved. They'll be assigning this his eighteenth temporal violation, alternate version or not.

2373, myself. I'm afraid you're from a little farther along than I, even if your uniform is still stuck in the past, if you'll forgive the irony in that statement.

Apparently, even the Delta Quadrant doesn't shield you from them either.

[ she shook her head, wondering how it was possible that all these things could happen - especially the temporal anomalies, people building time ships just to alter something, or in her case destroy her ship. multiple times ]

I'm afraid Starfleet didn't sent along the latest design in their last data stream. It's curious to see how things have changed - I've learned of some things, but not everything can be told in a quick communicae.

I see no problem with filling in the gaps for you, Captain, being that your missing past is my present.

[ he sighed. ]

To start off, there was an attack by the Borg on Sector 001 -- Earth, specifically -- a few months ago. One cube.

[ janeway shook her head a little - if it isn't one thing, its always the borg ]

I guess Voyager wasn't keeping them busy anymore.

Had a few run-ins with them?

[ he frowned. jean-luc knew first hand how awful the borg were. he didn't like knowing that the borg had bothered janeway and her crew -- even if such made sense, being that the borg originated from the delta quadrant. ]

You could say it almost changed the course of history.

One of my crew is former Borg. The circumstances were less than ideal, but she's made a wonderful addition to the crew.

[ that surprised janeway more than she suspected it would. she knew that the borg wanted to assimilate humanity, they'd had enough humans already, but to go back and do something that detremental? ]

It's good to know that you were there, I'd hate to think what the present - or future - would be otherwise.

Seven of Nine? Yes, I'm familiar with her. She's an...interesting individual.

[ which was the best choice of words picard could think of without coming off as insulting. his prejudice against the borg was something he was working through. he would not doom himself to a life of being captain ahab, forever hunting his whale. ]

They attempted to go back in time, stop First Contact, and assimilate Earth. We followed them back and prevented as much; kept history on the correct course.
