> Ignorance is the parent of fear [Bones | Sickbay | Open]

[McCoy was in Northern Sickbay, where he had been for the duration of this epidemic, but the vast crowd of patients seemed to be thinning out. With this many white coats you think someone would have stopped them leaving, he thinks in mild annoyance as he looks over another PADD ( Read more... )

[Once he had been able to stand and walk, Spock had sought a place as far from the main sickbay area as he could. The light was less bright. There were less people to observe, and disturb his rest. Sleep, though, was not coming easily. He shifted onto his right side, pulling the blanket over his lean frame even though he was not in need of more physical warmth.]

[McCoy had made sure to keep a vigilant watch over the crew hailing from Fifty-Eight. He had told Jim himself that their Spock and Uhura seemed the worse off for this thing, although his counterpart was not exhibiting the same symptoms as they were. Spock had become more withdrawn after rousing from sedation and McCoy wandered over to see how he was doing now, monitoring his condition with a tricorder as the half-Vulcan pulled the blanket over him.]

[Without his usual sensitivity of hearing, Spock was not alerted to Bones' approach until he was almost hovering over him, and a vague shadow moved on the wall nearby. Momentarily startled, he twisted to see who it was who had found him. It was not whom he had hoped.]

[McCoy notices that Spock seemed distressed by his approach and shrugs his shoulders apologetically as he lowers his tricorder.]

Sorry.

[Even if the Vulcan was not a lip reader, maybe he was bright enough to at least get that as he examines the gauzes on his ears.]

[Despite the urge to jerk his head away from his friend's hands, he held himself still and allowed him to tend to him.]

I was merely startled. I will adjust.

[McCoy rolls his eyes at his excuse as he checks up on Spock. Just a few more days, and he will be back to his infuriating Vulcan self. He remembers when his version of Spock brought him in and his desperation... it was unnerving, but at least McCoy knows what he was trying to convey now.]

Have you found the cause of our affliction, doctor? Was the other Spock able to decipher the message I gave him?

[It was easier for him to focus on such questions. To set his mind to the current stationwide problem, rather than his own personal ones.]

Yeah, I've found it.

[Although he couldn't quite discern the words, he took it as an affirmative.]

Then I look forward to reading your report on it. I trust that soon we can expect relief from...the symptoms we have been enduring.

Just relax, Spock.

[Spock attempted to sit up, a restlessness beginning to nag at him. He could tell from Bones' expression that he was not approving of such an action. ]

I have been resting for several hours, doctor.

Hey.

[McCoy takes a firm hold of his shoulder and attempts to push him back down onto the bioped and gives him a disapproving look.]

You're not going anywhere or doing anything. Lie down.

[McCoy's hand on his shoulder triggers a stiffening of Spock's posture, but he stops short of actually forcing the hand away from him. There's a tension though, in his manner, which cannot be completely hidden.]

I desire to get some air and stretch my legs, these beds are not of sufficient length to be comfortable. You may accompany me if you wish.

[McCoy notices that he seems uncomfortable around him. In fact, his attitude had been off since he woke up after sedation and he wonders if the whale song is still hindering him. He grumbles before helping the obstinate Vulcan off the bioped.]

You thick-headed Vulcan. Fine.

[There is a pause. Then he looks down at his friend who is helping him to stand.]

Thank you.

[The doctor does not now just how much Spock wants to be as far from the sickbay as possible. At least for long enough to gain some respite from his troubled mind.]

[McCoy helps steer the Vulcan by his elbow and sighs. Goddamn it, he's getting soft.]
