"Will you tutor everyday instead of three days a week, even though it means rushing to class afterwards?"
"Okay"
"Will you take on a full-time job in the 20 hours a week the university allows you to work here?"
"Sure"
"Will you, in addition to the 2-3 hour a week internship for which you are not even getting credit this quarter, help me start a speech and debate club? remember, it will be more work than just being there at lunch time once a week because you will basically be in charge of the club!"
"Of course!"
In all my free time, i have agreed to help start a speech and debate club at emerson junior high. We're gonna meet once a week at lunch. If anybody has any ideas about what I can do with these kids, please let me know. The teacher I work with is calling it "your club". Awesome. I SO have time for this.
I blame my mother, by the way. She does this kind of thing (overcommitting herself/inability to say 'no' to more responsibility in organizations to which she is already committed) all the time. I think it is genetic.
If I get into Teach for America, this is either what is going to make me an awesome Corps member, or what is going to run me completely ragged and kill me.
