My pal Auto led me to
a website where someone has chronicled the weekly Famitsu sales numbers since 1996. It lists the top 100 games from 96-98, the top 300 games from 99-03, the top 500 games from 04-08, and the top 1000 games from 08-10. Also, starting in 06 the Media Create numbers are available too.
I decided to go through and list all the

I can see Data crying in the corner. No wonder Capcom has been so reluctant on making Legends 3...
Rockman & Forte (136) 91,097
Sad to see a Classic game not getting more love than that (personally, one of my favorites, I even have an import of the SFC version...)
From its start, Rockman Zero was a downward spiral, which is unfortunate though I can kind of understand.
I guess not as many were fond of Inti's level designs (Spikes, spikes everywhere).
Rockman X Command Mission PS2 (312) 36,635
Rockman X Command Mission GC (460) 18,599
Interesting that the margin between the PS2 and GCN versions was only about 2:1 despite the much larger PS2 install base than the GCN install base.
Rockman X8 (296) 35,546 [And this is probably why X stops here.]
Ouch. Generally, many consider Megaman X8 to be MUCH better than X7, but perhaps low sales were attributed to the sting of playing X7?
I'm actually just now realizing IHX and RockRock didn't come up until now. I thought maybe I missed them, but nope, they did that poorly. We're only seeing them now that the listing covers 1,000 games!
I recall hearing that the US release of Maverick Hunter X alone did better than the JP release of MHX and MMPU combined?
Rockman Zero Collection (246) 41,383
This is six years into the DS's lifespan (five years after the release of MMZ4), and despite being a collection of all four games, it still managed to far worse than any one of the games by itself. You'd think collections would sell better, since you're getting more gaming value for your dollar/yen/euro/etc.
I think perception of a previous game seems to affect the next game's sales.
Despite being considered the best title, Star Force 3 sold the worst in the series.
Battle Network climbed UP in sales from 1 to 4, then steadily declined afterwards. 2 and 3 are the most liked in the series (from my own observations, at least), whereas 4 and 5 are the least liked.
The Zero series continually declined with each sequel, which could be attributed to its perception of difficulty.
Then with Megaman X, we see 5 sold better than 4 (and X4 has often been considered best of the PlayStation games), but then gradually declined with 6, 7, and 8.
It seems that with each console generation, Capcom has introduced a new Megaman sub-series. With 3DS here, and PlayStation Vita and Wii U around the corner... you think Capcom will release an all-new Megaman sub-series? If so, would you say the odds are high that it'd be another action-RPG series (seeing how BN and SF have been amongst the highest-selling Megaman games). Personally, I'd really hope for a new action/platformer (or a re-revival of Legends 3...), but I know not to get my hopes up with Capcom anymore...
