Rationality: Science and Faith

May 22, 2008 13:43

Science cannot exist without faith. This is a fundamental truism that is frequently ignored by atheists who argue for a scientific positivist world view. Of course, the lack of proof of their underlying assumptions is ignored by their faith, even absolute certainty, in the rightness of these assumptions.

My mother sent me this link today. It covers the debate nicely, and even highlights the arguments to which I refer so frequently on such topics. A beautiful description of the problem is given by Mary Midgley in this debate.

Reason needs more than science because of the limitations of science. Claiming that unproven or unprovable assumptions are more or less scientific than another is futile and dishonest. Choose to believe in God or not, but do not claim that science has any special relevance or adds any special weight to the debate.
