Fic: Carousel. (Ten/Rose, PG, post-JE, open challenge.)

Carousel. Ten/Rose, PG. This was something I kept planning to write for a couple of picture challenges, but never finished it until now. Oh well, challenge amnesty time! It's set post-Journey's End, when Ten is travelling alone.

The mirror maze. It's a relic of an older time; before the plastic alien cups and the glow-necklaces and Spongebob ( Read more... )

Everyone around him is happy, or sweaty and stuffed and broke from too much fun. Most are both.

It is the loneliest place in the world.

OW. YES. THIS.

And then: It's only a name. But it mattered to the witches, and it mattered to the beast, and it matters to him.

Your stories fill me with wonder, which is, of course, the point. xoxo

Ohhhh, this was so good. I miss you writing! Your name always catches my eye because the prose itself and the style always suck me in, and this was no exception. I think you rendered post-JE Ten quite well, sort of managing to walk him down that line between totally-alright-really-I-swear and the deep, on-edge loneliness. The description of the fair at the start -- "loneliest place in the world" -- was spot on. The atmosphere is really well done as well, very creepy and sinister while still (or at least originally) maintaining the cheery, sugary fair backdrop.

The room of mirrors and the sinister alien plot lurking underneath was awesome. I think I need to reread to figure out exactly what happened when because I got all anxious and kept reading too fast, lol. Bad Wolf! And! The confrontation at the end is brilliant because you can feel the ~oncoming storm~ coming off Ten.

In conclusion, this was brilliant.

Ohhh, post-JE Ten. Alone in the console room, staring upwards. I kept thinking of his damp shirt, without the jacket on, like he'd peeled his armor off and there was just this frail human body underneath. Just like you said: he spends the rest of the specials pinballing between manic goofy I LOCKED IT LIKE A CAR and, er, the Waters of Mars.

So, I'm really happy that came across! Thanks for this lovely comment. I'm so glad you enjoyed it.
