Breaking the Rules, Nine/Rose, G
“I never go back,” he repeats. His eyes land on her, piercing blue eyes that both terrify and captivate her. “Once my offer is made and that blue box disappears...it’s a rule I have, never go back.” 392 words
A/N: The beginnings theme is really perfect as this is my first fic for this community and my first time writing Nine. I'm very excited to be part of this community, hope you all enjoy!
“I never go back, you know.”
The faint glow of the TARDIS illuminates Rose’s confused expression as her gaze turns to the Doctor. He’s staring up at the ceiling, arms spread over the back of the jump seat, his tone almost dismissive. “What’s that?” she asks. She chews the inside of her mouth nervously. Just breathing the same air as him sets her on edge. She doesn’t know if this is good or bad. It’s too early to tell. They’re only just beginning.
“I never go back,” he repeats. His eyes land on her, piercing blue eyes that both terrify and captivate her. “Once my offer is made and that blue box disappears...it’s a rule I have, never go back.”
“But you went back for me.”
“Yes. I did.”
They stare at each other then, for a long time. It’s a sort of game they play. She takes in his posture: both tense and at ease; recalls the feel of his hand around hers, both inviting and distant. So much of him is contradictory. So much of him is hidden.
She thinks of the moments in the alley between the TARDIS disappearing and reappearing: Mickey clutching at her like a child to his mother, scared and sniveling, seeking protection from the big bad wolf; as soon as the word no left her lips, an icy feeling of regret seeped through her, making her blood run cold.
Now, on the TARDIS, with this mysterious alien with big ears and an even bigger smile, she grins, tongue between her teeth. “Good thing you did too,” she says. “Or else there’d be no one to save you the next time you’re attacked by a shop window dummy.” She laughs. The air is light again.
The Doctor rolls his eyes, though Rose can spot a ghost of a smile in his expression. “Don’t flatter yourself, Rose Tyler. Don’t forget, I saved you first.” He stands up, flips switches for something to do. “So, where to this time?”
“Oh, doesn’t much matter to me,” she says, shrugging and crossing the console to stand beside him. He pays her no mind, setting coordinates, until she continues, “Doctor?” He looks up at her expectantly and she bites her lip. “I’m glad you broke your rule.”
There’s that smile. It lights up his eyes, melting the ice there. “Me too.”
