His Place in the World

His Place in the World, Nine/Rose, Ten/Rose, Ten2/Rose, G, But he leaves them unspoken and broken.  How could he do that? (473 words)

He sits here on top of the world
And he thinks
About how he is alone, the last, the only
And he thinks
About how scary that is
And he wonders
Where he’ll find the courage to face this
Day after day after day
When at heart he feels himself a coward
And nothing more than that

He sits here on the top of the world
And he thinks
About a human girl, a rose, beside him
And he thinks
About how beautiful that is
And he wonders
If she can ever find it in her heart
To love and to stay
When he fears he is too old and battered
To ever deserve that

He sits here on top of the world
And he thinks
About how he’s changed his face, his body
And he thinks
About how she was so scared
And he wonders
If she can accept it, accept him
In the same way
That she did before, so easily and completely
Please, can she do that?

He sits here on top of the world
And he thinks
About how much he loves her, needs her
And he thinks
About how maybe he’s tempting fate
And he wonders
If it even matters because she loves him
And he can’t again betray
No matter who or what stands between them
He won’t do that

He sits here on top of the world
And he thinks
About how he left her, lost her
And he thinks
About how he could ever do this to her
And he wonders
How he’ll survive without her, if he can even
Find the words to say
But he leaves them unspoken and broken
How could he do that?

He stands there at the bottom of the world
And he thinks
It isn’t worth it, to keep fighting, to survive
And he thinks
She wouldn’t want him to give up
And he wonders
Where he’ll find the strength to live, or want to
Come what may
But for her he knows that he has to, must try
How will he do that?

They stand there together, feet in the sand
And he thinks
About how this is it, their chance, their hope
And he thinks
How he is the lucky one, himself, and yet not
And he wonders
If that kiss meant everything it promised
And if she can forgive him or even begin to
Her heart caught in the fray
If she can do that

He sits here on top of the world
And he thinks
About how he’s with her, is not alone, won’t ever be
And he thinks
About how he wakes up wanting to kiss her
And he wonders
At how tightly, desperately she holds onto him
He marvels that he ever deserved this
But clings onto her anyway
Forever, he’ll do that
