Hey guys, you know what I've found is a good cure for homesickness?
HANGING OUT WITH THE TRAGICALLY HIP FTW.
Oh man, best show of my life. I went by myself, and ended up missing the beginning, because they didn't have an opening band. First impression: HOME I've never seen so many Canadians in one place outside of Canada. If the plaid and hockey jerseys didn't give it away, there was someone on the balcony with a Roughriders flag. Definitely something I didn't expect to see in Glasgow.
So there I am, standing awkwardly by myself in a sea of middle aged men and frat boys, when this guy with his hands full of beer tries to get past me, and I moved to let him through when I realized it was Al. Amazing! And I met Rachel who promptly handed me a beer after introductions.
We moved up to the front, and ended up really close to the stage by the end of the night. They didn't have an opening band because they played for TWO HOURS with an intermission.
Al heard that after bands play that venue, they always go to the bar across the road. We went and it was packed, but we got stools right up at the bar as you walk in. After about an hour , we didn't think they were coming, but Al was just drunk enough to go outside to their tour bus and basically tell them to come. After a while, the guitarist with the long hair (Rob) showed up at the bar. We ended up talking to him for ages and Al (remember, very drunk) was like, "I'd like to buy you a drink sir! Roisin, do you have any money?" and then Rob was like, "No way man, I am buying you guys drinks." GREAT.
We met two others as well but didn't hang out with them as much. And alas, I did not meet Gord Downie =( He didn't come to the bar because he was calling his wife then going to bed because they had another show the next night. Bizarrely, that kind of made me like him more.
YAY.
