Rufus Wainwright's setting of Shakespeare's Sonnet 20, from his album All Days are Nights: Songs for Lulu. He sets three sonnets to music on this album (numbers 10, 20 and 43), which consists primarily of him singing and playing piano.
This album feels at times like a confessional, a soul laid bare and held up for all to see, stains, scars and all; the music resonates with strains of Liszt, Rachmaninoff and even a touch of Philip Glass thrown in for good measure now and again, but in a way that is uniquely all his. There are times listening to this album where I'm almost afraid to move or even breathe, for fear of shattering the fragile-sounding moods that he sometimes creates. Not an easy album to listen to, but well worth the effort, especially if you're engaged in some soul-searching of your own.
