Hades.
I do not like this place much. I never have. There are many bad memories here for me, and more than that, there are many here who would gladly have my soul, even in the Afterlife.
But I came here, not for myself, but for Black Adam. He asked for my aid in helping me find himself, and by his words, by our earlier conversation, I knew what he had meant when he said he wanted to find himself, to regain his identity.
He wanted to find his late wife, the mighty Isis. The only place where I knew to begin searching in the Afterlife for a woman long gone was here, where I had contacts in the underworld, no matter how detestable I found them.
Thankfully, I did not need to go all the way to Tartarus to find who I was looking for.
"I see that you've once again made your way out of hell, so to speak," I said, my voice cold.
"Diana, darling," the approaching figure said to me, her voice rich and low, sultry and dark. "You really are the last person I would expect to come pay me a visit." The cloaked figure stepped into what little light was offered and removed her purple hood. My own blue eyes stared directly into a pair of blazing red eyes that were framed by olive skin and dark violet curls as unruly as the woman they grew out of.
"Circe," I stated, my voice cold. I owed this woman no warmth, no friendliness. There was too much hatred between us, too much bad blood for the two of us to ever get along, to ever want to get along. She wanted me dead, and I wanted her as far away from death as possible to ensure that Hecate's prophecy would not come true.
"What brings you to Hades?" Circe asked, standing with her hands on her hips. She looked me up and down before turning to Black Adam, looking him over, her lips curling in pleasure.
"Don't act as though you haven't a clue, Circe. You know full well why Black Adam and I are here."
"I do, but I just want to hear it."
"We're searching for his wife - Adrianna Tomaz. Isis."
"Then I would advise you and tell you that you are searching in the wrong underworld. You know as well as I do, Princess-once-Goddess, that we have no claim over the soul of Adrianna once she has passed on. It would have been better if you had sought out your Bana sisters and asked them for help into their underworld."
"A task that you know is impossible because of recent events, Circe. As the consort of the Lord of Hades, surely there must be something you can do to help us."
Circe's lips curved into a smile far more deadly than any I had ever seen on her. Her red eyes - already frightening to most - took on a dark, lusty glow. "Oh, there is Diana. There is. I just want to savor this moment. After all, it's not every day that the clay-born Amazon princess comes and asks you for aid."
"Don't savor it too much. If I could have, I would have reached Ares directly."
"Oh, of that I have no doubt. Unfortunately, Ares is currently a little...indisposed."
I did not like how she said that, but I let it go. For now. There would be time enough for me to question Circe later. First, I had to help Black Adam with his quest.
"Will you aid us, Circe?"
The sorceress crossed her arms and circled us, her eyes focussed solely on Black Adam. Black Adam met her gaze with one of his own, but where her eyes were heated, his were colder than the darkest depths of Tartarus. Circe could very well try to make Black Adam succumb to her charms, if indeed that was what her intent was, but she wouldn't succeed. He loved Isis too much to let anyone else into his heart in that way. Indeed, Circe might not even be able to raise lust in Black Adam for her, thank Aphrodite. "Oh, I don't know," Circe said darkly. "Currently, I'm more interested in helping myself, if you know what I mean," she added, stepping dangerously close to Black Adam.
Had Circe actually been born with an iota of common sense, she would have known that the move she had made was an incredibly foolish one. In a flash, Black Adam was on Circe, not at all in the way that she had intended for him to be. Circe found herself pushed against the wall, Black Adam's heavy, muscular forearm on her throat, choking her angrily. His face was close to hers, and he was whispering something in her ear. From the witch's expression, his words were none too pleasing at all. Still, before he did anything more to Circe, I had to stop him.
Gently, I placed my hand on Black Adam's shoulder. "Release her, Adam, or else she may not help us."
After hesitating for a moment, Black Adam nodded and loosed his grip on Circe, glowering. He still stood close enough to her to grab her if she said anything untoward once more.
I prayed that she wouldn't.
Circe, for her part, straightened up her hair and glared at Black Adam. "You seek my help and yet you attack me in my own dominion?"
"I love Isis," Black Adam stated simply. "And no woman, no matter how powerful, will ever be able to take her place in my heart. Nor do I wish to be offered any other woman." He crossed his arms, his expression changing to one of royal disgust. "Especially one such as you, the concubine of the Lord of the Underworld and War, a woman so beneath me and so base that even looking upon her brings shame to the gods who I draw my power from."
Circe's face became a mask of fury, and any beauty she possessed disappeared as shimmering violet energy started to crackle and sizzle around her fingertips. "You dare come here to insult me after seeking my aid? You dare come here and put me down, and expect me to help you?" She raised her hands and hellish winds began to surface, coming out of nowhere. "Foolish man-god. I am the mistress of Hades, the world's oldest living sorceress, and Hecate's most devout disciple. No one debases me in this way. Not here, in my court, in my domain, where I am the reigning power and you are nothing but..." a slow, ruthless smile crawled to her lips. "Nothing but vulnerable."
