Author's Note: Yeah, I'm toying a bit with established DC Continuity here in terms of timeline...

My golden lariat of truth glowed warmly against the starlight and the moonlight in the ruins of the building which, in a span of the last year and half, had been home to both the embassy of Themyscira and the embassy of Kahndaq, respectively. My eyes, once more their original bright blue, were open wide at the sight of Black Adam huddled in the middle of the room that had once been my armory, weeping openly over what looked like a shattered amulet of some sort.

"Black Adam?" I repeated myself, stepping closer into the room. My high-heeled red and white boots clicked and clacked on the tiled floor of the room as I carefully made my way to him, stepping over bits of broken roof. I held my lasso at the ready, in case Black Adam suddenly attacked me.

I didn't know Black Adam well. In truth, I had hardly met him, though I knew well of him, both as an enemy of Captain Marvel and later as a member of the Justice Society of America. We had never had much to do with each other, and as such, I had never truly be able to create any relationship with him, the way I had been with members such as Power Girl and Stargirl, as well as Wildcat, Green Lantern, and the others who had been close to my mother, who had also served as Wonder Woman for some time back in the 1940's. To say that I was taken aback by this appearance of Black Adam was to put it lightly. Never had I expected to see Black Adam so broken. Then again, given the events of his life recently, I suppose I should not have been as entirely surprised as I was.

Black Adam looked up at me, quite clearly horrified to have been found in this sort of state. In one swift move he was up, the tears from his face wiped away as a mask of anger covered his regal features. Had I been almost anyone other than who I was, I would not have been able to take note of the fact that Black Adam had launched himself into the air and was flying towards me. Had I been almost anyone other than who I was, I would not have been able to react, either.

The speed of Hermes on my side, I ducked to the side, missing Black Adam's attack. I made no move to attack Black Adam, though. It would have been wrong of me to attack anyone in the anguish he was in, no matter if he was moving against me.

He attacked me a few times more, and each time, I simply ducked his attacked, avoiding him, moving past him.

I would not fight him.

Realizing, though, that he would not give up in his attacks, I finally loosed my lasso upon him, the lasso catching him tightly around his chest, binding his arms together.

Black Adam angrily glared at me. "What are you doing here?" he asked in a deep, heavy voice. His accent was faint, I noted. Clearly, all the years and time away from his homeland had changed his accent, just as my accent was now only faintly Mediterranean.

"I do not know," I replied honestly. "I just returned from Themyscira. Coming here before going anywhere else simply felt right."

Black Adam lowered his fists as his gaze met mine. He held it, trying to surmise if I was indeed speaking the truth. It was obvious that he did not know much about me, either. The thing about me is that I cannot lie. It is an inability of mine that made taking on the Diana Prince persona extremely difficult. That I am unable to access my powers in my Diana Prince form helps quite a bit, in that respect, though it stills fills me with distaste.

"So the League didn't send you to look for me, then?"

I raised an eyebrow at Black Adam. "Why would the League send me to look for you, Black Adam?" Black Adam squirmed underneath the links of my golden lasso, causing it to glow brighter. "You cannot lie to me. You know this, yes?" I asked. "The lasso will not allow you to lie."

"It's also said that one cannot lie in your presence, though this has been proven false," he replied through gritted teeth.

My eyes hardened. "Why would the League send me to look for you?" I asked again.

"Check the bedchambers," Black Adam said, once more through gritted teeth.

"Tell me," I said firmly.

He sagged under the force of the lasso. "It's been a bad year, one in which I've made many mistakes, one in which I've done things I ought not to have done." He held my gaze. "I lost myself in that year. I lost myself, and I lost my family. I lost my sanity." His voice came close to the breaking point. "And the truth is, I don't know how to find my way back to myself."
