Depowering Event Starts [open]

Oct 11, 2011 20:57

Some point mid afternoon, a silence falls over the Mansion that's nearly as bad as it is outide. In a corner of the house, a blinding light speeds across the wing. A boy appears in just a white shirt and pants. The light then spreads, like a bright lensflare shuddering itself through the property ( Read more... )

Ororo did feel it.

Unlike many, she knew exactly what the feeling - or lack of feeling - meant.

As soon as she figured that out, she started running. First towards Charles's office, and after that, she was heading out to look for the boy. Because there was one person she knew had that effect, and that was Jimmy.

Once Hank had gotten over the surprise of suddenly being rendered "normal," he began his search for the mansion's other residents in hopes of discovering if they, too, were suffering the same effects he was. This was reminiscent of Jimmy, indeed, but Hank had stepped within mere feet of the boy before and nothing more than his hand had changed. Could his power have been amplified somehow? If so, if that was another effect of this blasted portal, then that was all the more worrying, for if Jimmy's powers could be affected in such a way then any ill-intentioned mutant could experience the same. And that could mean certain death for all of them.

Storm was the first person he encountered in his hunt. "Ororo!" he called out to her. Funny, his voice had lost a bit of its commanding presence.

His voice might have lost authority, but it was still very much recognizable; especially when she wasn't looking his way when he called her name, so the recognition came before the strangeness.

"Hank!" She turned around, face lifting into a faint, harried smile - until she realized what she was seeing. "Oh." She blinked at the man who was there. While she focused, she could sort of discern Beast's features in his face, but the impact was entirely different. She breathed a couple of times, then tried again. "... Hank?"

Hank smiled wearily at her surprise. "I'm sorry," he said. "I didn't mean to startle you." There was a short pause, during which he seemed quite unsure of what to say next. Uncharacteristic, perhaps, but he decided that even the most eloquent are allowed a lapse in verbal ability at the hands of indescribable shock.

"It's happened to you, too, hasn't it?" he asked when he found his words again, although he was almost certain he already knew the answer.

"No need to apologize, I just wanted to be sure." And he was getting a hug, most definitely. "Are you all right? I was looking for Jimmy. It feels like what he does. So he must be somewhere around." Beat. "Probably terrified."

They still hadn't known, in the future, what impact emotions had on the boy's powers. But it wasn't entirely impossible for some of the range enhancement to be because of the fear.

Kurt didn't know what to do with himself. He sort of wanted to run right out of the mansion and head straight for Manhattan, but there was something a little intimidating about that idea, even for the incredible no-longer-Nightcrawler. Besides, he had no shoes. That had never mattered before, but suddenly, it did.

He ended up wandering the halls, barefoot, trying to find out what the hell was going on. When he saw Ororo up ahead, hugging a strange man -- who he realized, quickly, with the awareness of one blue man for another, was Hank -- he hesitated, but then shuffled closer. "Who is Jimmy?" he piped up, a little nervously. "You mean Logan?"

"Kurt!" Ororo smiled, the joy clear in her voice as she leaned back from Hank to look over - and blink. It was as impossible to mistake his face as his voice, but it looked nothing like what she expected. Her eyes widened, but the smile didn't leave her face, didn't turn strained.

She squeezed Hank's arm, then let go, stepping next to Kurt to give him a hug as well. This was unlikely to be less confusing for him, and, well.

"No, not Logan. Jimmy's a student at the time I'm from. His power is to neutralize the mutations of others. Usually he needs to be much closer to affect one, but the absence of my powers feels the same way as when close to him. I want to find him before anything happens."

Beat.

"Are you all right?"

Even though Ororo managed to keep a straight face, Kurt couldn't help but look rather sheepish as her eyes widened. It was... complicated, this whole thing, and he was cycling through about eighty feelings at once; but when she came over to hug him, he wrapped his arms tightly around her, grateful for her reassuring warmth.

"I'm..." he hesitated. Happy? Sad? Relieved? Terrified? "...all right," he murmured and drew back, reaching for her hand to give it a quick squeeze, his new five-fingered -- five! -- hands still slightly stiff and awkward.

"--Wait." Her words caught up to him, and he looked between the two of them, blinking uncertainly. "So this child, he is behind all of this?"

Hank looked from Ororo to Kurt, and heaved a sigh. "He could be," he replied. "We should hope that he is, in any case." A frightened little boy was much easier to deal with than, say, Stryker with fancy new technology, after all.

"Our search would be far more effective if we split up," he went on. "If it's Jimmy, and if one of us finds him, we should take him directly to Charles's office."

Good gracious my brain stopped working. Please feel free to godmod Hank right outta here as he conducts his own search through the mansion.

It's all right! And thank you, and we will later backdate... things! With Hank! not_oreo October 20 2011, 10:34:09 UTC
Ororo's eyes narrowed up at Hank briefly. "It took much more advanced technology years before it could be reliably inflicted on others. I don't think anything artificial could be as... thorough."

Everyone, and entirely depowered. That... couldn't be good, really.

"Right. Yes, if we find him, Charles's office. And telling everyone what's going on. Keep the panic down." She squeezed Kurt's hand back, then squinted as Hank headed off one way. She called after him, "try not to overextend yourself? Reacting as you have been for a long time might get you hurt?" It was a reminder. Just in case.

And she turned to the opposite direction, not letting go of Kurt's hand. It was him, and blue or not, she cared for him. His touch suggested that it was, after all, more likely if she was close, for now.

"Be careful, mein freund," Kurt agreed, watching Hank retreat. Then, he turned to Ororo, tugging at her hand, something unusually hard to read in his eyes. He didn't know exactly what they'd meant by that cryptic little exchange, just now, but he thought he had an idea.

"The Cure," he said -- not exactly accusingly, but certainly pointedly. "You were talking about the Cure just now, ja?" Ever since he'd returned from the future, ever since he'd learned about the Cure, it had been on his mind. He'd told Ororo about it, brooding, spending long hours thinking about it. And now-- was it possible that it was really here?

Ororo met his eyes, her own clear and unflinching, and soft.

"Yes, and no. We were talking about the Cure, but that is not here. The cure was - well, in my past - a serum, created on the basis of Jimmy's powers, which needed to be injected. It was supposed to be a voluntary option, although at a certain point it ended up being used as a weapon, right before the facility it was produced in was destroyed. Jimmy became a student."

She sighed slightly, eyes moving out to scan the corridor for any sign of the boy. "I still don't know. I think calling it a Cure is incorrect, because we are not sick, there's nothing wrong with us - we're different. And I think at least the person who created it was well-intentioned. But it's... a great amount of power, in a way. And it had been around for way too brief a time for us to be able to even tell about the long-term effects and side-effects of it. After all, Jimmy's powers do fade when you move further away from him ( ... )

"No," he agreed, a tremor of excitement in his voice. "It's not evil." He grabbed her other hand, suddenly, facing her full-on. "Look at me, Ororo! Look what's happened! I can..." He held one of his hands up, still holding hers, their fingers laced together. "I can hold your hand properly, I can... there are so many things I could do."

"I know there is nothing wrong with us," he added quickly, a little defensively. "I appreciate that you feel that way about me. But the doors this could open... even if only the boy is here, this could be the beginning, couldn't it?"

Her fingers squeezed around his, and her hand came to his face, scarred in the familiar way and yet so different, cupping his cheek gently. Her eyes looked into his, gentle but deeply.

"Many people died because of the Cure," she said softly. "It's never simple, and nobody will ever be certain if it - or the way of making it - isn't in the wrong hands. But when things are calmed down and we've found Jimmy, talk with Hank about it? He was the one who looked most deeply into the creation of the serum, he can tell you if this time and place has the potential to do it."

Because this was important to Kurt, she could just about feel the way his whole body was thrumming with excitement. If this wasn't this unexpected, she thought it might be even anticipation of happiness he'd not known. Ororo didn't know which way was the right way, with the Cure. But she did know that the last thing she wanted to do was make Kurt unhappy.
