So, over the past years, my roommate and I have compiled a new language known as "Verbish". This language consists of made up words that we use, or hear other people use in the course of daily life. Most commonly, these are ordinary words that people somehow manage to make into actions. Verbish also contains words/phrases known as Zachinisms and Laurisms which are phrases or words spoken incorrectly that only a few people would truly understand the proper meaning of. So without further ado, ladies and gentlemen, I present you with The Oxfordish Verbish Dictionary.
Verbish (n.)- The language of Zach, Laura and Joshua wherein any word can be easily transformed into some sort of action
Joshuaism (n.)-
a. Any word or phrase (excluding verbs) that Joshua makes up in daily conversation
b. A religion originally practiced in Prescott but now spreading across the Pacific Northwest wherein Joshua is viewed as a God among men and a Princess among women.
Laurism (n.)-
a. Any proverb, word of wisdom or other such phrase as spoken and practiced by Laura Louvier
b. A word or phrase that utterly butchers the English language but makes sense in the mind of Laura and to those who know her best
c. A new and striking religion practiced primarily in California wherein its followers practice acts based solely upon what Laura feels is right or wrong
Zachinism (n.)- Any word or phrase (excluding verbs) that Zach makes up in daily conversation
Co-Applicate (v.)- Describes the process of being added as a co-applicant on a rental application form (first usage: March 8, 2008 when referring to Willow Ridge Apartments Rental Application "Put me under co-applicants so I can co-applicate for the apartment"-Joshua VerHalen)
Archered (v.)- The action of having used a bow and arrow, primarily in Civilization IV but also applicable to other situations, to inflict bodily harm with the ultimate goal being death of the enemy target (word origin: Civilization IV-Beyond the Sword "I totally archered Cyrus' warrior!"-Joshua VerHalen) (alternate forms: to archer, to bow, bowed, crossbowed, longbowed etc…)
Colonnate (v.)- Using Settlers accompanied by aggressing forces to expand one's territory into territory that was previously the property of a now-extinct or crippled civilization (word origin: Civilization IV-Beyond the Sword "I'm going to go colonnate Hot-Shit-Soup's continent!"-Zach Voelker) (antonym: Colonize-the peaceful expansion of one's territory)
Red-Vine (v.)- A request for a Red Vine candy to be passed from one person to another for the purpose of consumption (first usage: February of 2008 some evening while extremely hungry and seeing the 4lbs of Red Vines on Zach's desk "Zach, Red Vine me!"-Joshua VerHalen)
IMDB (v.)- The process of searching the Internet Movie Database for an actor or movie (First Usage: March 7, 2008 while looking to see if Camilla Belle was indeed the actress from a Disney movie many years ago "Well, I'm gonna have to IMDB it."-Joshua VerHalen)
Maple Syrup (v.)- Aggressively pouring or dumping the sweet Canadian topping on a waffle with the purpose of causing death by drowning. (First Usage: March 8, 2008 at Chartwells while describing a dry waffle "I'm gonna maple syrup this freaking waffle to death!"-Zach Voelker)
Moo (int.)- Word expressing dissatisfaction or anger (word origin: used in reference to the two nights spent at someone's dorm room and the subsequent cow jokes from everyone)
Shuttle Uing (v.)- The process of using "Shuttle U" services to travel from Phoenix to Prescott or Prescott to Phoenix to avoid the hassle of driving and parking (First Usage: March 19, 2008 while asking about Andrea McConnohie "Are you picking her up in Phoenix or is she Shuttle Uing it up here?" -Zach Voelker)
The Thick Plottens (Zachinism)- Phrase used to describe a twist in the storyline of a movie or television program that causes the circumstances of the story to become less clear (First Usage: April 10, 2008 when describing a moment during Star Trek: The Next Generation "The Thick Plottens!" -Zach Voelker)
Mary Poppins (v.)- The process of using "The Duck" or other umbrella to either facilitate lift or a slower rate of decent (First Usage: May 1, 2008 while Josh "melted" listening to Leontine "The Duck? What? Are you gonna Mary Poppins your way up from there?"-Zach Voelker)
Glew (v.)- The past tense form of the word glow as used by Zach. (First Usage: March 10, 2008 when commenting about the "Sword of Retribution" "I had a sword like that! It glew!"-Zach Voelker)
American Gladiator (v.)- The act of displaying physical strength and willpower well beyond what is expected to achieve a difficult to obtain goal. (First Usage: May 20, 2008 when referring to the cat climbing my screen door "Oh yes, she'll American Gladiator her way up there."-Zach Voelker)
Fightering (v.)- The act of engaging in any form of physical combat while armored for the express purpose of defeating the opponent (First Usage: June 20th 2008 while referring to SCA fighter practice next week "So I'll be fightering next week…"-Robin Bullins)
Poltergeisted (v.)- The movement of an object from one location to another, unseen by anyone who has noticed the move (First Usage: September 2, 2008 while referring to Jessica Walker hitting an "A" frame on Highway 69 "So how did it get there…I mean was it poltergeisted or what?"-Colette Strassbourgh)
MELable (Zachinism)- A word used to determine whether a piece of aircraft equipment is required by the FAA approved Minimum Equipment List for that category, class and type of aircraft (First Usage: unknown…attributed to any number of airline pilots desperate to get off the ground and not wanting to down yet another aircraft… "Hey Bill, is the 2 left engine MELable" *slap*)
WebCam (v.)- The act of using a camera device over the internet to share live images with others for any purpose, sexual or otherwise (First Usage: September 24, 2008 while asking about hair length pictures "Should I web cam you?"-Laura Louvier)
"The Travellinghood of the Sisterpants" (Zachinism)-A modified form of the "Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants" as spoken by Zach, an individual entirely unfamiliar with the series (First Usage: September 25, 2008 while discussing favorite movies)
VFR (v.)- The act of penetrating mountainous airspace under visual conditions after attempts to reach the MEA in the area have failed under IFR (First Usage: September 29, 2008 while discussing a flight plan to Leadville over the Rocky Mountain Front Range "We can plan to a relatively low area and VFR our way in there" -Zach Voelker
Glideslope (v.)- Flying an airplane solely by reference to instruments and crashing into terrain while under clear visual conditions (First Usage: September 30, 2008 while discussing the ILS 21L approach into Prescott "Keep the airport in sight or I'm going to glideslope us right into the tower"-Joshua VerHalen
Sheep (v.)- The act, whether simulated or real, of using twisted forms of "good" magic to turn an opponent (or a friend) into a sheep (Word Origin: World of Warcraft…a spell allotted to mages with sick, twisted minds)
Chariotreme (n.)- A horse-drawn war machine capable of crossing bodies of water...built by the Dutch army/navy. (First Usage: August 16, 2009 while referring to William van Oranje being able to attack over water "Wait! WTF is a Chariotreme?"-Zach Voelker)
Direct IP (v.)- The act of matching Internet Provider addresses to enter into the Civilization gaming world with another person (First Usage: August 29, 2009 while discussing the difference between LAN and Direct IP connections "...but you direct IPed into a LAN server"-Zach Voelker)
Logic (v)- The usage of philosophical babble to explain your way out of any situation. (First Usage: April 25, 2010 whilst watching Star Trek: Voyager Prime Factors "...now watch [Tuvok] logic his way out of this one."-Joshua VerHalen
Hindu'd (v)- The act of a city becoming forcefully Hindu after colonizing territory far to close to my own. (First Usage: April 18, 2010 whilst playing Civ IV "That's what happens when Carthage builds too close. He gets Hindu'd!" -Joshua VerHalen)
Zero-G (v)- The act of churning up burrito remnants in the stomach by performing a negative gravity maneuver in an airplane. (First Usage: April 22, 2010 while flying over Sedona Josh: "Let's do a Zero-G maneuver", Zach: "I'd rather not have my burrito Zero-Ging in my stomach thank you very much!" -Joshua VerHalen and Zach Voelker)
Katrina (v)- The act of destroying multiple buildings or people by way of strong swirling winds, torrential rain, rough seas and high storm surges....all common elements of a hurricane. (First Usage: September 14, 2010 whilst playing Civ IV "That hurricane just Katrina'd me!" -Joshua VerHalen
Maple Leaf (v)-To levy corporal punishment against a Canadian for any number of offenses. The preferred method of punishment utilizes a hockey stick, however this is not a requirement in the broadest definition of the word. (First Usage: March 23, 2012 after being nearly run off the road for the third consecutive time by a Canadian driver "Ok, the next Canuck who tries to put me in a ditch is getting Maple Leafed!"-Joshua VerHalen)
