I posted this as a comment in imlex's journal even though it didn't really have much to do with his entry. So I just thought I'd post it here, because it's true.

You know what really bugs me? No, you don't... so I'll tell you.

It's people (like the guy [Imlex] saw on the National) that feel they HAVE to go to Teachers College if their career doesn't work out. Teaching should not be a back up job!! People that think like that piss me off. I had several people during my time at University disclose to me that they had no idea what they wanted to be so they might as well go to teachers college. Teachers college is for those of us that WANT to be teachers! Not people that are indecisive or lack ambition. Even while I was going through Teachers College (which technically isn't supposed to be called teachers college any more, since it's a Bachelor of Education, taken at a Faculty of Education at a University), people would admit they were only there because they didn't know what else to do with their lives...

And it's so true. Then there's people like me who have wanted to be a teacher since age FIVE and have thousands of other people qualified to teach in Ontario as competition, when a percentage of them don't even WANT to teach. They want the job security (beacuse once you're in with a school board, there's only a few things that can get you fired), and they want the 2 months off in the summer (which for DEDICATED and RESPONSIBLE teachers is not, 2 months off... it's a couple weeks off, and then taking courses, doing research and planning for next year).

So yes. If any of you are thinking of becoming a teacher, PLEASE make sure it's for the right reasons, and not because your first few life plans didn't work out.

The End.
