"What are you looking so miserable about? There's a whole ocean of oil under our feet. No one can get at it except for me." - There Will Be Blood
I went to the mall today, I bought shoes for my job at the track, new headphones, and I went to see Hellboy II. I love the first Hellboy, and more importantly I love Gulliermo Del Toro, the director of the film. He is one of the few directors in Hollywood who has true, real, vision and sticks to it no matter what. In all of his films he creates visuals and characters that are exotic and beautifully crafted. Pan's Labyrinth is one of my favorite movies of all time, I really liked Blade II as well as the original Hellboy. I really want to see another one of his Spanish films The Devils Backbone. I enjoyed the new Hellboy as well. Even if you hate the plot, the characters, and the script, the film is so visually impressive that it is worth seeing. I don't usually tell people to go see a movie just because it's pretty to look at, but Hellboy is a whole different kind of pretty. It's Guillermo Del Toro pretty. And I just love the character of Hellboy. He's funny, he has his quirks (he likes kittens, Baby Ruth bars, and cuban cigars), and he has cool friends. Other than Hellboy, my favorite character is Abe Sapien, the polite, well spoken, telepathic sea creature. His eyes blink sideways, it's fun to watch. There is one scene in the film where he and Hellboy get drunk and start singing Barry Manalow, it's hysterical. I also really like Selma Blair's character Liz, who has the power of flame. Her and Hellboy make a cute and endearing couple. The creatures in the film are really interesting. There are "tooth faries", which are not as pleasant as they sound, and an angel of death, who has wings with eyes in them. That's one thing about Guillermo, he loves to put eyes in strange places.
I will be attending the midnight showing of The Dark Knight on Thursday (or technically Friday), and I have invited my dear friend Jess to come along with me. I like midnight showings, the last (and only) one I went to was for King Kong. This one will be even better because I'm taking a friend as well as going with my family and I don't have school the next day. I'm really excited for this film, critics are comparing it to crime drama's like The Departed, Heat, and The Untouchables. Richard Roper compared Heath Ledgers joker to that of Alex in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange. These are pretty bold statements, not to be made offhand or taken lightly. This is going to be one huge movie, not only because it's good (which I know it will be), but because of peoples loyalty to Heath Ledger. This film will be his legacy.
