I am becoming one of those people who thinks about my nonexistent thesis all the time. I'm not sure what I want to do and what my next course of action should be:

1. a more traditonal scholarly thesis that would derive some meaning from the pastoral tradition, the romantics, and the transcendentalists (tracking wilderness/agriculture imagery and structure in english language and literature). possibly relating that to particular conservationist/nature writers now, but that feels really shallow and obvious.

2. something more social justice oriented as to why nature/wilderness/farms are important to language and living, having to do more with theories about metaphor and story telling and myth than actual english language and literature....would probably include a lot more things like travel narratives and postcolonial literature (people's encounters and ways of telling stories about landscape and culture)

HMPH. anyways, this is relevant to my interests because I'm still deciding (stupidly! so stupidly!) if I want to go to oxford or ireland, and oxford would set me trotting along nicely on the first path, while ireland would probably be a good set up for the second.
