So being sick and having to be on medication had me pumping and dumping which allowed me, for a short time, to drink no-no's while boobie milking i.e. mocha frappacinos with shots of espresso ( high in caffeine, a no-no for babies); some wine (worked a wine dinner where me and my gay were sampling those featured); and energy drinks which I used guzzle (never getting Rock Star again, it made me feel woonky). Also it allowed me to eat some munchies that I tried to keep away from like twinkies!
So in my few days of junk, I sample a few tasty treats that a the subject of this True Fatty article.
There are so many yummy confections to choose from, all on a varying scale of baddness for your health. I am sure if one was to consume these on a regualr basis, a series of problems would develop including weight problems, diabetes perhaps, cholesterol and heart problems to name a few. They can be so hard to resist once you have had a taste or you can be one ot the luckyones which enjoy the loverly yummy at first then become ill after a few have made it into your tummy and you vow never to have them again. Todays comparison of treats are Hostess Ho-Ho's and Little Debbie Swiss Cake Rolls.
Let us begin with the boxes that are designed to catch your eye.
Swiss Cakes have a traditional looking design with an innocent Little Debbie posing on the top to asure parents that my swiss cakes rolls really arent that bad, they are yummy and just like grandma used to make which lures parents into thinking that they may have less yuckies in them which equals to "healther" so that they may not feel as bad that they may be putting toxins into themselves and their children.
Ho-Hos are clearly designed to attract children. A new box design for the new millenium. The box, with its bright colors and swanky design, screams super yummy and fun! Also, the devilish ad agency added hypnotising loop-de-loops both in the lettering and subtlely in the blue background. This gets the kids excited for the party in their mouth which the box promises and hypnotises the parents into buying it despite the fact they know it is full of junk.
Now, to look at both rolls, you'd think there is not much, if anything different about the two chocolate treats.
o contrare.
We will start from the inside out.
The creamy center:
Swiss Cakes have a delightful center which does resemble fresh cream in texture and somewhat in taste. Vanilla in flavor, it is not over-powering and complements well to its chocloate cake buddy.
Ho-Hos, though looking scrupious with its extra white center against the rich dark chocolate surroundings, is, alas, nothing but frosting. Coming from hostess you would imagine the creamy center to resemble the creamy centers of their yummy cupcakes or their flagship product, twinkies. But no it is frosting. Overly sweet, the kind that burn the back of your throat when you swallow.
Swiss Cakes is the winner here.
The chocolate cake:
Swiss Cakes have an average chocolate cake, brown in color, soft in texture that allows the cream to seep into its creavasses as you bite into it, its flavor a little lacking but all around not bad.
Ho-Hos choc cake is superior here. Rich chocolate in color, it has a good chocolate flavor similar to a devils food cake. Texture is firm and does not mingle with its center-- the flaw of highly preserved frosting. Despite this flaw of frosting, hostess makes a good chocolate flavored cake.
The outer chocolate coating:
Ho-hos take this round hands down. The thick, rich chocolate coating is solid, coating every crevasse keeping its form throughout munching.
Swiss cakes, however, though nothing wrong with flavor, is a light flimsy coat which flakes and falls even before the first bite.
The freeze factor:
I like my confections frozen sometimes. I enjoy its coolness as I munch and at times flavor is enhanced.
Swiss Cakes are the winner here. Even though the outer coat still flakes, the over all flavor and enjoyment is enhanced during chilling. The creamy vanilla center makes its average chocolate cake more chocolately-- a good mix of flavors playing off of each other. Swiss Cakes also retain their moistness even when freezing.
Ho-Hos on the otherhand, lose all flavor and its cake solidifies to a texture that is lacking and unenjoyable at first chomp. This I belive is due to its frosting center which hardens to a tasteless sugary subtance----unlike Swiss Cake creame which mimics that of an ice cream center when chilled or frozen.
It seems like the score is 2 to 2. However Ho-Hos' not so great frosting center ruins the ho-hos entirely, at least for this conesure. Swiss Cakes clearly wins.
If only they could combine the two, filling Hostess's chocolate cake and outer shell with Little Debbie smooth cream and moist texture. That would make a good Swiss Ho! tee-hee
Let us not forget the other yummies in Hostess and Little Debbie land:
Nutty Bars are sooo good for that peanut butter chocolate craving. Sure you can get a peanut butter cup, but Nutty Bars have just the right sweet-salty combo that leaves you craving for more. They freeze and chill extremly well. And their waffer insides give a nice texture to the confection experience.
Twinkies are just good. You may not think of them or crave them often but every so often you just got to have a Twinkie. Soft, moist yellow cake and creamy, fluffy insides secretly call to you over and over so that one day out to the blue you hear it and just got to have a Twinkie!
Warning: consuming to many twinkies makes your tummy ache, gives you the runs and a big headache. Not to menttion fat. Do not freeze.
