Oscar love
I woke up to the delightful news that Glenn Hansard and Marketa Irglova had won the Oscar for best song. I absolutely adored the movie Once, so naturally I rushed right over to youtube and found their performance from last night. I'm so pleased that it won! I really enjoyed Enchanted, from which 3 or 4 songs were nominated, but it's essentially a musical written for film with songs by established B'way music composers. It's designed to have mass appeal. "Falling Slowly" is a SONG, a little albeit great song from a small, independent film, written and performed by the artists themselves. It's bittersweet--sad and hopeful and longing--a love song for adults. It's not the fairy tale. It's better. Yeah for independent artists and filmmakers!
