in the waiting room

Inside Philippine parlors, the radio rules.  Unfortunately for me, I was holding a book and valiantly trying to read.  It was frustrating.  I battled the loud and irritating upbeat percussion of many pop hits.

I came to a marketing conclusion.  When selling an experience (not just a service), don't forget the waiting room.  This is the room that greets your customers for the first time.  These are also the metaphorical four corners your customers' companions will occupy for perhaps hours at a time.  Make sure it is in keeping with your intended atmosphere.

I don't mind upbeat music while browsing for clothes in the mall.  I expect it.  But when I'm looking to get away or to do something purely for myself, I'd rather walk into an oasis of calm.
