writer’s Notes: jumpstarting

This comes a few days late, before the frenzy of the Obama inauguration caught me.  Nevertheless, what is below is an ongoing struggle.

IT”s the start of the new year.  As much as January begins to rev my engines, it also brings out my inner sloth.  Here, in the middle of winter, where the thermostat reads -5 degrees Fahrenheit, it is easy to burrow beneath the sheets. And, after the sudden crash of my laptop synchronously occurring during the holidays, my mental brakes hold fast despite the incline.

So, I start the year, groping.  Caught inside a foggy memory, I struggle to bring my hands to the keyboard feeling as awkward as a teenager on her first day wearing braces.  I go through the motions of typing, only to find myself more often deleting.  I speak the words in my head, only to have it tangled in the morass of my neurons.  And, I turn away desperate for distraction.  Then, guiltily, I return, once more to face my adversary, staring blankly with cursor a-blinking.
