The Road So Far: 1.03, Dead in the Water

Er, yes. I haven't actually stopped doing this, but, y'know. Life. Hoping to pick up the pace again, but who knows what's going to happen. Maybe it's only something I can do between seasons, because S6 completely wore me out.

I'm really glad you've gone back to analysing these early episodes. I've never done a full rewatch, so season 1 seems a very long time ago. You're pointing out lots of fascinating stuff, in terms of the writers laying the foundations and signposting future developments.

Me too. :) I really missed doing it, but I just didn't have the emotional and mental energy for it during S6, somehow. It could have been all that kvetching I was doing, of course. But going back through these very early days just reminds me of everything I fell in love with in the first place, but with the perspective to really be able to really savour it.

"Whereas Sam wants to build his own new world and family, from fresh, and do it his way, Dean is drawn to an already-existing situation. One where he can contribute, have immediate material worth and use, one he doesn’t have to shape in his own image, because honestly he has no idea how to do that and deep doubts about whether that is a valid endeavour."

I am very impressed with your articulation of how the show is shaping our perception of the boys, and your analysis of the relationships between both the main and secondary characters!

I look forward to reading more of these!

Thank you! I was just thinking how much it helps to know the story in full when doing this, and to have had time to let it all sink in, rather than the urgency and speculation of doing reviews as the episodes come out. I mean, both are good, but I prefer doing this kind. Hopefully I'll keep churning them out! :)

I love these! :)

And I agree on the substitution thing - it really could have been Andrea and Lucas. Also, never forgiving Gabriel -> Balthazar, even though Balthazar has the potential for awesome hijinks (I'm on Australian tv schedule with s6, so only half way through I think) and I have kinda loved him since he was in Roar.

(I know I've said it before, but that icon? SO adorably sexy. And I can't even say why, other than obviously it's Heath. Guh. And yet, awww.)

One thing I've always liked about SPN is they don't hang on to things that aren't working, and I guess the flipside is they sometimes recycle what DOES work more than they maybe should. But overall they pull it off. I won't spoil you, but I did like what they did with the Balthazar character, as the season progressed. They do seem to have something of a kink for English characters (which I don't mind at all).

How are you even real? This is just so perfect. I want to have you sitting next to me all the time when I watch Show, so you can explain it all to me ( ... )

"Which is why Sam can, out of family loyalty, go off with Ruby in "Levee""

I LOVE YOUUUUUUU.

Although in fairness we should note that vengeance was what got him to that point, too. :/ Oh, Sam.

And, oh Dean. You always make me love Dean so much.

Well, when it comes right down to it, it's not THAT hard to love Dean, really. :p

You forgot angsty. Long, angsty years.

.... AARRGGH. WHY, Show? *shakes fist*

I think you probably already know how I feel about that.

It's possible I may have an inkling. :D

"vengeance was what got him to that point, too. :/ Oh, Sam."

Oh, obviously. And anger and stubbornness and guilt and, well, Sam had a lot of issues.

"it's not THAT hard to love Dean, really."

It's impossible NOT to love Dean. But when you write about him, it reminds me WHY I love him.

TRUFAX. :(

*cuddles the darkness out of him*

Incidentally, you're on Sam detail. If I miss something or get it wrong, you have to tell me. Dean is so easy to get that I don't really have to put any thought into him at all, but I keep having to dig for Sam and I'm concerned I'm going to do him a disservice.
