the whole demon-army boy-king plotline I was reminded again how much I hadn't cared for that, and how happy I am the strike changed it.
Yeah. I mean, I have no doubt that they could have done interesting enough things with it all - this is Show, after all - but meh. We've talked about this, but one of the amazing things about Show is how many plot threads they just drop once it becomes clear it's not working. Like the psykids, although it does make me curious about how that was going to tie in if they didn't change direction halfway and make it into a Highlander situation. What's also interesting is how each time they start to expand things in some way - like the Roadhouse, the psykids, the "demon war" and even the apocalypse, they always ended up bringing things back down to the most intimate scale. That's where the story just works. Anything more starts getting too ponderous.
So which parts of 3.01 didn't you like?
(I was initially pretty meh about it)
Also why?
They were raised like warriors! *gigglesnort*
Oh man, it's this sort of thing that makes me wonder if we're all just blinded by the light (and baby faces) when claiming that the pilot is so good. And I guess it's not so much that it's good simply on its own merits, but that it just lays out everything that Show is about so well.
2.01 is fantastic, but it probably ranks lower for me just because I lean toward later seasons.
I tell you, John and his epic manpain in it almost makes it my favourite. *wibbles*
Ultimately though I have to go with 4.01.
Woo! Season opener brain-twins! Woo! Because so good. SO GOOD.
It's possible I need an intervention. You can be my sponsor.
Wait, which? 2.22 or 3.01 and 5.01?
Oops, sorry, I meant all of them. Each one is quite painful, and watching all three in a row left me feeling drained. And you know I love me some emo-pain, so for it to have that effect on me was a bit surprising. I had to watch Dean lip-syncing to Air Supply just to cheer myself up.
So which parts of 3.01 didn't you like?
I don't like Isaac and Tamara. I know. I know I'm supposed to care about one-off hunters (or psykids, or randoms), but I just don't. And I don't like the actor's face, yes, I am that shallow. His face bugs me. And while I'm being shallow, it bugs me that Tamara is English. (Yes, Bela, the world beyond America's borders, worldwide demon war, I get it. Still bugs.) There's also Ruby, and try as I might, I just don't like this actress that much, or the way she's written. Add to that the zomg-how-will-we-kill-the-sins-they-are-so-powerful except not, and you're left with some strong SamnDean stuff interspersed with meh. But, as I said, if I skip all that (and there isn't really much of it, or at least, it doesn't seem like a lot when I skip over it) it's a pretty good episode. :D
But, boy do I love the way Dean is half laughing at Sam the whole time, seeing how much he can get away with before Sam loses his temper. And of course there's the end, where they talk about Dean's deal. It's such a frustrating conversation, in the best possible way, because I feel so much for Dean and I get where he's coming from, but I also want to smack him upside the head. It's a fine line, having a character be that selfless and selfish at the same time, and they manage to pull it off. I'm always left feeling so sad for Dean. And Sam.
As for 5.01, I remember disliking Becky. I felt like they were trying to revisit 4.18, with diminishing returns. That obviously doesn't bother me at all now. "This is for my friend Cas" Cas-hate! \o/ I had a lot of it back then. :D I don't know though, for some reason it just rubbed me the wrong way. I hated almost everything about it the first time I watched it, but I have no idea why. I had less of a problem with it when I watched it at the end of the season, or whenever it was. But it's one I hadn't rewatched since S5, so I don't really know why I didn't like it. I love it now, so obviously I've come to my senses. If I weren't trying to kick my list-loving habit, I'd mention it comes in second after 4.01. ;p
I guess it's not so much that it's good simply on its own merits, but that it just lays out everything that Show is about so well.
Heh, well, that may be the worst line in the whole episode. Okay yes, it's a bit clunky in places, but you know what? I think it's a solid episode. There are better episodes, but there are worse *cough7.05cough* If it sucked, if it was truly terrible, I don't think it would have pulled us in in the first place. Sure, if I'm being all fangirly and trying to rank it, my feelings for their baby faces take over. But didn't we both like it before we were "fans"? And we are a couple of picky people.
I tell you, John and his epic manpain in it almost makes it my favourite. *wibbles*
I must admit, I was surprised you ended up choosing 4.01 over this one.
Oh John.*shakes head* I love how he saves Dean and 'damns' him at the same time. When I watched 2.22, I wasn't thrilled with John coming back (though I can see why they couldn't leave him in Hell), but I liked that he saves Dean again after Dean has literally damned himself. (And of course Dean has damned himself partly because of John.) They really, really, love their symmetry.
Huh, these questions are tougher than I thought.
Ha! Vindication!
holy crap these were painful episodes. Wow.
