Funny, based on stuff I heard from people who played Amber, I was under the impression that people choose their character based on favorite colors. "Um... Well, black and silver is an AWESOME combination".

Mostly, people create characters designed to annoy the other characters as much as possible.

Obviously, Zelazny used both techniques - neat colors and annoying other characters.

I think I now understand both roleplayers and SF fans much better than before.

Nah, the real fun is running an Amber game and watching your players be total assholes towards one another.
In the game I ran in highschool we had a visiting player one day. He sat down, created a character, joined a session, said hi, was insulted by the other characters, and left.
Then again, the player was a bit of dick.
