Well, I got my fic finished but hubby's fishing trip was a complete disaster.

About three-quarters of an hour after he'd left the house I got a call saying he'd broken down.  The brakes had failed completely.  Luckily it happened on a quiet stretch of road at a time when no other cars were about.  Over a week later I still get the heebie-jeebies thinking about what might have happened.

As a result we spent most of the week in car-less limbo.  It's impossible to get anywhere without a car in our little corner of rural France so we were pretty much confined to the immediate environs.  Plus it rained ... and rained ... and rained.  We spent most of our time holed up in the house.  Great for me.  Plenty of time to write.  Hubby, with not much else to do except DIY, was ever so slightly fed up.

We celebrated getting the car back by going out and about this weekend.  Saturday morning was spent shopping in Beaune market followed by lunch in our favourite cafe.  We were accompanied by Borrowed Dog, who has gradually morphed into Timeshare Dog as our house is virtually his second home now.

Going on outings acommpanied by a dog has given me a different perspective.  For a start, people talk to you more.  Or rather, they talk to the dog and you get included in the conversation.  Timeshare Dog is very good at looking cute and soppy so he gets cooed over a lot in public places.  In additon, he attracts small children like flies and the parents feel they have to at least pass the time of day with us.  All of this can be a lot of fun.  There is a downside, however.  TD can be an agressive little bugger and is prone to start growling and barking at another passing dog for no apparent reason.  I wouldn't mind if he picked on someone his own size but he's inclined to go for the big nasty Rottweilier-y types.  We're afraid that one day one of them will decide to eat him for lunch.

Sunday we salled out to a local "Fete d'Automme".   This particular one is a combination of car boot sale, craft fair and farmer's market.  We took a picnic and spent the day browsing, accompanied by our Dutch friends.  I am now the proud owner of the world's most useless teapot.  It's shaped like a pile of books with a lid in the shape of a cup and saucer, complete with teaspoon.  It would be impossible to pour without losing the lid and getting tea all over the place.  It's quirky, cute, and uttlerly pointless and I love it.

This week hubby's off to have a second stab at the abortive fishing trip.  I intend to take advantage of his absence to get back into Come the Revolution.  Oh, and I've also got to do some research for my November challenge fic for
omniocular, a Sherlock Holmes/HP crossover featuring the politician, the lighthouse and a trained cormorant.  How do I get myself into these things?

Finally, a meme for which I was tagged by
loupnoir:

List five truths. Five things that are on your mind. Good, bad, it matters not. Lift some weight off. Then, pick five people to do the same.

1.  Despite living over three years in France I still think of England as "home".

2.  I understand the concept of moderation.  I just can't do moderate.

3.  My greatest fear is that the cancer will come back.  I still have nightmares about it sometimes.

4.  My favourite time of the year here is Spring.

5.  The only things I couldn't do without are my books.  I'm hopelessly addicted to the written word.

I'll throw this open to anyone on my f-list who feels like having a go.  Over to you.
